A good video converter (dvd to iPod etc.)?

Ascomdog (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 20th March 2010, 07:28

Hi.

Can anyone recommend a good video converter? I`m looking for something that can convert from dvd to iPod, generally, but anything that does extra will be welcome.

I`ve used the usual suspects regarding dvd to dvd etc., but now I`m looking for something that will also allow files to be converted for the iPod Touch.

Obviously, I`m looking for something free(;-)). I used Super a couple of years ago - is that still a good recommendation? Or are there better nowadays?

Cheers.

I really liked Super but I can`t get it to run on Vista.  I currently have this: http://sourceforge.net/projects/oxelonmediaconv/ which seems fine.

Thanks, xfg.

However, I now have the problem that iTunes constantly freezes. I too have Vista, but I just cannot sort this problem at all. I can get iTunes to see the iPod, but it freezes when I try to do anything with it.

I`m so peeved with this - iTunes is utter cr*p!

No idea about iTunes, I`m a WinAmp girl myself.  Maybe you can manage iPods with WinAmp, if not I`ve used this with a friend`s iPod: http://www.ephpod.com/ it was a few years ago but IIRC it was easy to use and did the job well.

Sharepod is worth checking out if you have iTunes problems.

I`d heartily recommend "Handbrake" for the video conversion. It`s free and doesn`t have any annoying spyware/ads etc. in it (like Videora unfortunately does).

In terms of DVD conversion, just make sure you install something like "DVD43" which will remove protection (on the fly) and then Handbrake can convert directly from there.

As for your iTunes issues, sorry can`t help too much there. I have it working fine on Windows 7
