Best way to check if someone`s using my router?

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Monday, 4th February 2008, 20:43

Got a wireless router (connected to the PC via a network cable), but I use the wireless for my PSP.

I have a fairly complicated password, but it could probably be beaten by a bruteforce hack. Bit tionfoil hat, I know, but is there a way to see if another PC (or mobile device) is using my router?

What encryption are you using? Assume it`s WPA. Crappily (new word ;-) ),the PSP doesn`t support WPA2. :¦
What router is it? There should be an option for `Log` or something similar. They`re all slightly different but it should show at least the MAC addresses connecting. You should enable MAC address filtering on the router and also set it so it doesn`t broadcast its SSID.

Speedtouch modem. Got it free off tiscali (they also sent me a netgear wireless G as well, I`m biding my time until it goes on ebay) There`s no speedtouch setting available to configure, as far as I can see, unless I`m looking in the wrong place

WEP security, apparently

Is there an `attached devices` option anywhere in the router admin page?

WEP security is the lowest setting possible. Well, above having none whatsoever. It`s old and quite easy to crack..
It was replaced by WPA - which has been superseded by WPA2. Change it on the router and the PSP. Also, you will see the MAC address on the PSP settings. Enable MAC address filtering on the router and add the PSP`s MAC address. Although this can be fooled, it realistically means only that MAC can access your router. If possible, stop router from broadcasting your SSID (router name). The PSP knows it so it no longer needs to see it. (after changing the PSP security settings..)

I`ll be frank here, SJ, I understood exactly squat of everything you just wrote. And as far as I can tell, the router doesn`t have any settings that I can see. All the installation software came on the flash-orientated tiscali installation CD that came with the router.

Methinks I may need to unwrap that second modem they sent me.....

Forgive me Stanz for being a bit dim, but a Speedtouch modem is just a modem, not a router. One needs to connect the speedtouch to a wireless router (the Netgear you`re about to sell would fit the bill).

I`m puzzled? :/

As to router settings, you get at these by running up your browser and typing in the router address (you can get this from your ip settings - just run a cmd prompt - (start-run-cmd) and type IPCONFIG /All (hit return)

The `Default Gateway` IP address (usually 192.168.1.1) is the router`s address.

You`ll be prompted for a username & password (netgear`s default is username=admin pwd=password). Once logged in you`ll see a series of tabs for configuring the router & wirless access.

Hope this helps and I`ve not been too stupid...... :B

Just craptacular....

Type that on your web browser and you will have all the settings that you need.

Is that the time? Damn you Xbox 360!!!!

OMG YOU USED THE CD..... are you supposed to use those, f***, thats where i keep going wrong, i just plug mine in & it works, then if i need to access the router, i just get the ip addy off the bottom of the router & go there, i`d assumed if people wanted to get access to your broadband, thay would still need the password regardless of which type of security you use ?

or should i start double folding my tin foil hat ? i don`t wanna do that in case the ping pong ball don`t fit no more :(

Re= the modem/router question,,,, if it`s adsl (landline based) don`t most providers ship a combined modem/wireless router these days ? so technicaly, it`s both a router & a modem ? or am i reading it wrong (quite possible, i am rather drunk :p )

And DVD Dude is the winnah! That link gave me a very basic screen which told me what was connected and how (PC by ethernet, PSP by wireless). So if anyone else connects, I`ll know about it

Cheers guys
