Windows Vista - worth it?

Miles (Elite Donator) posted this on Thursday, 3rd May 2007, 09:36

Hi all

A colleague is off to NY next week so I was thinking about ordering a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate (full edition DVD) for approx £180.......and its £310 over here!!!!

So my question is...is it worth it?

Has anyone made use of the "Readyboost" functionality using a USB key? Does it make a difference?

Cheers
Miles

Its annoying as f*** and bug ridden. It also eats up resources like buggery and will slowdown any machine its on, other than a new dual core.

We tried it on a few machines and went back to xp within literally a day.

I wouldnt touch it until its been on its first service pack, at least, but, I suppose, for that price, you may as well get it and persevere with XP until the service pack appears (september-ish, allegedly).

Keep checking Scan as about once a month it comes up in various flavours & prices on the Today Only deals for less than £100 if bought with OEM hardware. ;)

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Thing is, can`t be arsed with the OEM versions anymore.
Apparently the OEM contracts on Vista are a lot tighter than the XP ones - so if you continually try and re-build/re-register then you`d get into problems. Hence looking at the full version.

I installed a copy with no cd-key, which give you 30 days iirc, borrowed from a friend. I did a dual boot with my current XP install so I could fall back if required.

I used Vista for about the first week and haven`t bothered with it since. It booted up fast but it just looked to me to be too much eye candy - form over function. The Aeroglass interface doesn`t add anything above looking nice, and as I`ve said even that has very limited appeal..

Also I had problem streaming videos from web pages, when I had a look round the `net I found it to be the new copy protection system that was not letting me play them, so I had to boot back to XP to play these vids - Nice!

Direct-X 8 and 9 games played poorly, this might be down to imature drivers so give that time.

Also the UAC or user access control was soo picky I ended up turning the damn thing off.

Some food for thought..

Like I said.... WWW.BADVISTA.ORG :D

There`s a lot more than just DRM enablement in there!

Thanks for that link Jimbo. Makes for interesting reading.
I`ll give it a miss for now then!

(Planning on buying a Mac Mini when they eventually move to Core 2 Duo chips so I might be an OSX convert anyway...you never know!) :D

I think a lot of people are thinking about going down the Fisher Price My First PC route.

The mrs has got a macbook and its not as awful as i thought. If MS havent got their fingers out by the next time I upgrade, i may find myself paying over the odds for a comparatively low specced piece of white plastic too (seriously).

Nooooo, don`t do it! F***in` Macs. My sister in law has one and it`s the Devil`s work. The bloody elitist Mac attitude p***es me off as well. Those adverts with Mitchell and Webb... "I`m a Mac and I don`t get viruses", yeah, `cause no one can be arsed writing them for Macs.
