Scan 2500 - the current position

Dan Bates (Admin) posted this on Monday, 4th March 2002, 10:03

There are a number of Scan 2500 threads popping up at the moment, so I thought I`d pull together the comprehensive response on my part.

I`m DOING the review. Anyone who`s read one of my reviews knows that I like to live with the machine for a while, and this is reflected in the detail - not like some reviewers who use a player for an afternoon then either slate it, or praise it to the skies. The review is therefore NOT delayed because the machine is bad.

I HAVE been testing new firware, and it seems to VERY satisfactorily fix:

a) remote problems
b) zoom stuttering

I am still testing any other improvements.

The player plays multiregion out of the box, and also RCE out of the box as far as I can tell (testing with Perfect Storm R1), but also allows you to hard change regions if that proves necessary.

Still need time to complete testing, and also check out MP3 operation. After that I complete the review.

There, patience friends, it`s coming ;-)

What a load of bollox, the machine should have had problems like this sorted before it even went on sale, I mean they showed up pretty quickly when the customer bought the machine, so didn`t the people who make/sell this machine try it out! It`s a farce, nelly should try giving up is Sony equipment and use the untested stuff he is flogging.

And you Mr Bates should write your review on the machine you got out the box like the customer would get, not after all this firmware s*** that manufacture has sent you has been installed1

After the treatment I had from Scan, I would`nt touch them with a bargepole. They sent me the wrong thing took months to answer the phone, & I still have money outstanding after a year. BUYER`s BEWARE!!!....with all the machines out there I`m amazed anybody should buy from this SCAM...sorry...SCAN.

You know best.By the way its SOLD OUT.The number of problems with remote ets has been less than 1%.I will give you the email of the manufacturer so you can tell him.Remember sonys go wrong as well
as with a recent model. You wouild think they tested there machine ie the
ns9000.In these case you have to send it back to sony. Here its on a disk
and no need to send it back.

Nelley I have no beef with your self or scan as I have never used one, thus have no opinion. But you don`t do your self any justice with comments like "You know best.By the way its SOLD OUT." It just makes you sound like you could not give a toss.

Just my thoughts.

All the best,

Andrew.

Nelley, I think you probably missed a post I made last week, I don`t have access to a cd burner, so I`ll need Scan to mail a CD to me, do I send you my address, or someone else?

Bear, don`t ever buy a computer if you can`t handle a little bit of a problem. It`s not as if it stops you watching DVDs. Dan Bates review should be written on the latest version of the machine he was able to test (i.e. with the firmware fixes, since that`s what the customer will get). The point of the review is to advise people who are considering buying a DVD player. I really don`t see why there`s people having a go at Scan. As far as I can tell the 2500 is the best value I was able to find, and the remote problem was fixed within a month of the release of the machine, pretty decent for something which is just a bit of a minor annoyance unless you`re doing something athletic with the remote.

Bear

I think your position is unreasonable, and biased by your opinions about Scan as a company. I test players to the extreme, and that includes investigating all hacks, tricks and updates that are available for it so that the review covers all the details of ownership. To do anything but would be remiss as far as I`m concerned. To blindly review the machine as a virgin `out of the box` experience would be false and an ultimately pointless exercise.

I agree that perhaps the machine shouldn`t have shipped with these problems, but that would also be pretty false. These manufacturers are always pushed to time scales, and AFAIK Scan had sold through the 2000, so they needed a new model ASAP. If they had just pushed them out the door then I would condemn them for it, but they have offered an update which fixes the problems, and you can`t argue with that. I have also tested and assisted Scan with the firmware because that means that purchasers of the 2500 will eventually get a machine that performs to it`s maximum potential, and again, I think that is a service to the community (and I would do it for any hardware manufacturer supplying us with review kit).

When it comes down to it, the problems with the 2500 were not even major, and hardly impacted the use of the player at all. If you care so much about a stuttering of the picture when you use the zoom that you can`t wait less than a month for a fix then you have larger problems.

I`ve never claimed Scan has the best customer service. Most people on this board know what they might be letting themselves in for if they have to RMA or refund kit from them, and Nelly knows this is an area in which they must try to improve. However, people buy in that knowledge (if they choose to seek it), and I make the point in my reviews, so I think that`s fair - If you DON`T have a problem with the 2500, then you get an excellent player for amazing money.

Dave and Paull

You guys should contact Nelly personally by email, and keep badgering him until things are sorted out. Just posting on these forums will probably not get the same results as personal emails.

Cheers guys

Dan

I agree with you Paull Scan Customer Service is shocking (thats being polite) Once they have your money thats it, they could not care less.

I had MAJOR problems with them last year as did a few of my friends and colleagues with faulty IT kit, Their `testers` dont know their ar*es rom their elbows. I work in as a Senior IT Analyst and if I treated my customers the way Scan do with theirs I would be in the Job Center faster than I could blink.....

Come on Nelley get your finger out and start treating your customers with the respect they deserve.... After all they pay your wages
