YAY ! I got me a Blu-Ray player

Rex Hamilton as Abraham Lincoln (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 26th February 2009, 13:46

I have had my 37" LG lcd tv for nearly a year and never seen anything in HD before. I took the plunge and splashed out on a pioneer player.

:B WOW :B

1080p rocks

It sounds better too i`m sure with my old trusty 5.1 amp using the digital coax connection than my DVD player ever did.

one thing though, I have read up a lot on this - the 24hz thing just sucks. My tv supports it, but it converts itselft to 50/60hz (not sure which) so when in 24hz mode I get a judder about once a second. If I set the player to 50hz it`s smooth and silky !
Yes the tv supports it, it tells me the resolution and frame rate.

time for a new TV methinks. :)
It`ll take forever to save for one though :(

I have watched just a couple of BD films and they were amazing, DVD`s look better upscaled too. So much better than RGB scart.

DON`T tell Basbat that, he`ll hunt you down because there`s no way new tech is better than old tech. ;)

Just because your TV accepts 24Hz input, it doesn`t mean it can display it at a multiple of 24. Most TVs that can take 24Hz simply convert it to 60Hz internally, thereby rendering it useless (and actually worse than plain old 60Hz). It might say 24Hz, but that`s probably just the signal it`s receiving rather than what you are seeing.

You shouldn`t be able to set the player to 50Hz either, because virtually no BDs are encoded at 50Hz or any divisible multiple of it. BDs are generally 23.976Hz to maintain compatibility with NTSC`s 59.94Hz rate. If you can set to 50Hz there`s got to be some interpolation going on. BDs are usually played back at 24Hz or 60Hz (rounding up).

I know it`s a bit late now, but I`d have saved a few quid on the super expensive Pioneer BD player and gone for a new TV. You won`t really see the benefit of a Pioneer at that screen size/quality. Maybe a Sony or a Panasonic would have been better value for money.

But now I`ve got it, I can upgrade the TV next and know that the player is A1. The picture quality is absolutely stunning with a HD film. I wish I had got it sooner. :)
oh the player outputs 24, 50 or 60hz.
This is it on the "what hifi" site

I don`t trust What Hi-Fi - that`s barely a review. Can`t see how they gave a product that`s only Profile 1.1 and has no on-board Master Audio decoding (yet) five stars either. Having said that, I thought you had the stupidly expensive LX-71, so my comments about price are somewhat irrelevant.

I would be slightly mystified if the player was able to take 23.976Hz and convert it to 50Hz without it looking like s***. I`m sure the 50Hz output is just for DVD, not Blu-ray (comments on the AVForums would seem to support this).

I am just wondering why a £350.00 machine as not got a Ethernet port fitted ,I thought it was a must for any HD/Blue-Ray player. :/

Cheers Chris, I know what I`m going to do know and it`s going to cost, but I`m sure it`ll be worth it. Found the S550 hack easily enough so I`m happy I can get rid of my DVD player...
