Page 1 of Total I-Pod virgin needs help (please!)...

Ok - this whole I-Pod/downloading music thing has kind of passed me by... I`m not really in to "new gadgets" - and still have a lot of my music on (lovely) vinyl/LP.

I currently listen to most music on my cd walkman - but now I`m looking into getting an I-Pod... The thing is I don`t know anything about them/what to do - I really am a total virgin when it comes to them (I mean.... explain them to me like you would your old man or grandpa... ;) ).

Basically, I`d like to know the following:

1. How much are they?
2. How many tracks/albums can they hold?
3. Once I`ve got the thing - how do I download/put the music on there!? (told you I knew nothing...)
4. Will the albums titles and tracks automatically be named/listed - or do you have to do it manually?
5. How can I transfer (possibly) my LPs - but mainly - my cds onto it...?

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I`d like to get it sorted for Crimbley... :)

1) Depends on how much you want to spend. You can get a 2 gig Ipod Nano for about 90 quid off amazon, up to £220 for an 80gig one.

2) about 250 tracks per gb

3) If you havent already, you need to start ripping your CD collection. If you install Itunes it pretty much does it for you when you put a CD in. Once you have done that you connect your Ipod to a USB port and it either loads it full of random tunes or you can drag and drop into it.

4) Yes, see above.

5) There are various ways to do LPs, most of which involve a little fiddling. If money is no object, this is apparently very good: Vinyl to USB. See above for CDs. Oh, you will probably have to name LPs manually.

HTH. I just got the mrs an Ipod for christmas and am in the process of filling it up, so im doing a bit of finding out myself. Basically, if you have a fairly modern PC, just decide how big you need the Ipod to be and buy it. The instruction manual is pretty clear and easy to follow so you will get there eventually.

Here`s some infor for you.

1. Various prices depending on what make / model / size you go for
2. Depends on the size, a single track is somwhere between 5-10mb depending on quality
3. You can download using newsgroups or P2P. An iPod uses iTunes software (free from Apple website) to transfer the music.
4. Depends on who creates the MP3`s. I use Music Match jukebox to transfer from my CD`s and it names them really well. Some of the ones I have downloaded I had to rename them using software like Tag and Rename.
5. I transferred some stuff from LP`s and cassettes by converting them to MP3 using Music Match jukebox and using a cable from my hi-fi headphone to the line in on ym sound card.

Don`t despair Mr. H. I am still trying to figure out how to get music onto my MP3 player from the computer. Six months later the music still resides in my computer and refuses to live elsewhere, even in a shiny Sony player.
Aaah, the convenience of modern technology. >:(
Just gave up in the end and cycle listening to the lovely traffic instead.

Has anyone got around to ripping a dvd to their Ipod?

I can`t find any free software that works and I don`t think Itunes helps :/

Have you tried the program Super? That`s usually very good at converting things to certain formats (haven`t got an ipod so can`t give much advice sorry)

So am I right in thinking that an I-Pod is basically a portable version of I-Tunes? ie. if it`s on I-Tunes/your PC, all you have to do is download it onto an I-Pod?
