Philips DVDR3380 DVD Recorder - any good?

deano59 (Competent) posted this on Monday, 26th June 2006, 23:18

Play have it at the moment and it looks tasty considering I want to backup my video collection and it takes -R disks. It also plays divx. I guess what I really want to hear is that it is not another 610 as I have heard nothing but bad reports about that model. I also need to know if it produces a good picture and finally is the tray slow to open?
Best Wishes
Thanks in advance for your help
Dan

Please avoid philips & buy any other good make, even if you have to spend a little more, it will be worth it. philips (And that goes for almost everything they make) & poor reliability/service go hand in hand.

Sorry but I cant give any feed back as I booted philips out of the shop a few years ago due to poor reliabilaty and non existant back up. (ended up getting a customer a pioneer plasma out of my own pocket due to philips washing thier hands of a problem) They owe me big time.

You ask for feedback and are told that every DVD recorder philips have ever made have reliabilaty problems, you then say you dont mind buying a philips DVD recorder despite their poor reliabilaty............. :/ :/

Is it the day or minutes you are worried about or could seconds be a problem? :)

Bear in mind, me and Paull never agree on anything so for us to come together on this one, means you should sit up and listen. It will go wrong. Buy a Panasonic. They work and stay working.

if you want reliability then deffo go for the panny machines, tho tbh, i don`t know if they do a divx model tho (but i`m sure someone here will know :) )

Never mind, it`ll all come out in the wash.

Take a look Here.

I wouldn`t buy anything without DVD-RAM or hard drive, but I`ve heard good reports about this make & it`s cheap enough.

Hi there, here`s some advice regarding the Philips 3380. It`s fussy but great with the best features of all these current Vestel clones (the others are Cambridge Audio, Sanyo, Goodmans, KiSS, Wharfedale). Just use good discs and you won`t find bugs or reliability issues. RiDisc +R Xtreme are very good and it works great with JVC/Sony -RW but not Maxell -RW from Argos. As for -R, no probs with Ridisc or other 8x big name types
