Wharefdale 750s soundtrack problems

Harley (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 10th June 2001, 22:52

I have a wharfedale 750s and a Yamaha DSP A5 amplifier and have encountered two major problems.

Firstly, the Amplifier does not recognise the Dolby Digital soundtrack on any DVDs and plays them as pro logic.

Secondly, when playing in DTS the sound randomly skips but the picture does not.

I would like to know whether others with the Wharfedale 750s and a different amplifier experience the same problems, and whether there may be a solution (firmware upgrade?)

You can get it to do DTS but not Dolby Digital ?

Yes, the DTS soundtrack is recognised but is not perfect (skips), but Dolby Digital is not recognised at all!!

Harley/Natas,

Not sure whats going on here, do you have any feeling as to whether its the amp/receiver or DVD player that is at fault here.

I have a 750S(latest firmware rev) attached to a Kenwood KRFV7030D, and both the DD 5.1 and DTS output is amazing !

I also have 3 other colleagues who all bought the same kit and they`ve seen no problems either, no dropouts, no skips - just a good sound no matter the format its in.

I have a reasonable collection of disks, plus films that I borrow and haven`t found one yet that won`t play on this hardware config or that has audio problems.

We`ve all been very pleased with both the player and the amp.

To prove which component is at fault have you tried hooking another DVD player up to the amp or vice versa, assuming you have access to other kit ??

Is there a film that`s particularly bad, if I have it or have access to it I`ll listen to it again carefully to see if I can spot any problems, but as mentioned above I`ve seriously never had any reason for complaint so far.

Are the films that play up a particular region or is it all.

I must admit that this sounds more like a hardware issue or the cable connects setup that is at fault here.

I hope this has been of some use.

Cheers

Chris

Presumably you`ve connected the 750 to the A5 via a digital cable (optical or coaxial) ? The A5 will automatically sense the signal being bounced along the cable, and will switch to DD or DTS automatically. If you are connected this way, sounds like a cable fault - but...

Similarly, have you told your 750 you`re connecting this way ? (Most players have an option to enable/disable digital audio in their set-up menu somewhere).

The other thing is, have you checked that you`ve actually selected 5.1 or DTS as the audio option in the film you`re watching ? I keep forgetting to do this, and couldn`t work out why Men In Black wasn`t forcing the A5 to switch to 5.1 - then I saw the audio menu in the film and realised why - d`oh!

Sorry if these seem obvious, just helps diagnosis !

Thankyou for your responses.

I have got the amplifier linked up with a optical cable. I have tried the same cable and amp with another DVD player (panasonic A160) and both DTS and DD ar recognised and work fine. I use the Wharfedale for Region 1 and this is where the problem has arisen with the DTS soundtracks (Almost Famous and Saving Private Ryan). The DD soundtrack is not recogised on region 1 or region 2 dvds.

On the basis of your replies I am guessing that there must be a compatibility issue between the 750s and the DSP-A5, or maybe I was incredibly unlucky and picked two 750s with identical faults!!

If it is any consolation I have a Wharfedale 750s and a Yamaha RXV-800 (Big brother to the A5) and although my Dolby Digital is fine (awesome in fact!) I also have skipping on the DTS soundtrack.....Its completely random but at no time does the picture skip....

I get the skipping on R2 discs (Gladiator) but haven`t tried an R1 disc yet.

If you get a resolution post it to the forum!

Hmmm - I had the 750S and the DSP A1. Played DD fine, but the sound skipped relentlessly on all DTS soundtracks. I tried a further 5 (count `em) Wharfedale before both I and Tesco decided to call it a day. I now have an LG 3350E and no DTS problems.

A friend has encountered similar DTS problems with his setup - 750S and another Yamaha decoder (can`t remember the model - 300 something?).

Maybe it`s a batch of Wharfedales, maybe it`s a Wharfedale/Yamaha thing. One thing is for sure, despite making several enquires with Wharfedale, they never came back with a reply. Tesco engineers said that they couldn`t solve it because Wharfedale refused to supply service information.

Just a thought but have you selected bitstream in the wharfedale main menu I had this problem with dolby digital on my wharfdale/denon set up and it cured it

Thankyou very much for the information Bounce. That has solved both of the issues.
