Whats the best teaching software for Kids learning on the PC?

rehan (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 12th January 2011, 19:55

My kids are starting to learn on a PC at school so I set up an old PC for them.

What is the best curiculam based learning software out there? My children are 5 and 6yrs old and would like to get them the teaching software for maths/english and science.

I saw many at PC world but are after some recommendations from people that have used them before.

I don`t think disc based software can keep up with the web any more. Have you checked out the BBC Bitesize website? They cover just about all subjects starting from KS1, and are recommended as back up to the national curriculum by schools.

There are other excellent education websites as well, but it`s a bit early and I can`t remember them as yet.

Edit: Incidentally, I was really impressed with my new PC that I got just before christmas and wished they had done this back when my kids were little. It`s an HP, and it has what is called a "Magic Desktop" for young children. Switch to this and set it up so that`s all your children can access, and it contains loads of brilliant education software and games, plus a SAFE internet browser that only links them to approved sites, with no URL bar! I was so impressed, and can`t recommend this enough to parents with young children!

My son uses EducationCity.com

You can register as a parent, or through the school... there is a fee but he gets on with it quite well.

I guess it depends on the age of the child... they do a free 2 week trial I believe though.

I don’t know about any educational software, but I’m using SPAM SPAM SPAM for my children, & kids like to do study with it. They are teaching some basic SPAM SPAM SPAM with these DVDs. Really but these helping my kids in their studies.

this is an interesting topic... our five year old, finishes her reception year today, so i would like something to help her through the holidays, and further...

She goes online already and uses CBeebies and Milkshake websites, both have some good content.

At the moment she is in the top 5 of her class of 36, and she is one of the youngest, i know they all develop differently, but want to give her the option of every thing out there...

She even said last night when i put her to bed, she didnt want the summer holidays, as she wants to stay at school!

My sons school recommended the whole class subscribe to Education City.
Costs a bit but my son loves it. Been on it every day even though been on summer holidays for weeks. Have to keep reminding him to go out and play.
