Page 1 of Car question...

My old Corsa went defunct last year and so I kept it on private land and applied for it to be SORN`ed.
This ran out in June this year - but the month before I got it taken away to be scrapped.

Yesterday I recieved a letter from DVLA saying I hadn;t used SORN again so it was untaxed and I was liable for a £80 fine. (£40 if paid in 28 days)

As this vehicle was taken away a few months ago I have contacted my mate who arranged taking it away to find out what they did (mate said they would get documentation to scrap etc)

So where do I stand? I know that its my responsibility to check all this. Am i still liable to pay the fine? Or is there a new form to sort out?

In a move shortly before I SORN`ed the first time I lost the V5 document thing...

My wife is now stressing saying I`ll be in lots of trouble for not declaring it scrapped _ I would not have a problem paying the £40 fine if I then just needed to fill in a form to say its scrapped and thats the end of it.

Anyway have any experience in this?

Your mate has likely bought a new Merc SL with the scrappage allowance from your old banger :D

as Mr Sparks says, its your responsibility to fill out the scrapped section of your V5. If you cant find the V5 Id assume you would have to apply for a replacement V5 and then fill out the section to inform the DVLA the car has been scrapped. I dont think you have much choice as far as the fine goes, looks like you will have to pay it and then sort it all out once the replacement V5 arrives.

Do you get some kind of form from the scrappers when you scrap the car off? Ive only had one car scrapped and that was all done by the insurance company, I sent them the V5 and they did the rest, I assume when you scrap the car you will get some kind of form to send with the V5 to prove its been scrapped.

£80 might not be much to you Mister Smee - it`s a lot of money to some people.

Like I said, easy-prey and it sucks.

Meanwhile thousands of foreign trucks are over here wrecking our roads, causing massive amounts CO2 emissions and pay nothing for it. They also cause lots of accidents but you have virtually no chance of claiming against their foreign insurers.

Only if they`re dodgy feckers, and there`s just as many of those likely to be British. :/
I`m in the freight game, dealing with International drivers on a daily basis, and the fact is the ones I`ve been dealing with for 26 years are perfectly legal.

I would also dispute your claim that they "pay nothing" for coming over here.
Again, that may apply to some, but certainly not all.
Many have to fill up here, they use British Ferry companies, they use British food outlets and they use British accommodation services.

You seem to have a skewed idea of foreign truck drivers. :/
I tell you something, most of them are a pleasure to deal with.
