Death in the family, help needed !

galaxy (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 7th October 2007, 01:22

My aunts long term boyfriend for 20+ years has died today on the isle of sheppey (KENT) and was a shock as he was only in he late 50s and no illness known, he just dropped down dead and that was it !!!

I am going through my mind as to what is the arrangements to transfer a his body from Kent to South London (Southwark). I am basically getting some idea to pass on to my poor aunt at this sad time.

Your help or experience will be appreciated, I understand that funeral directors will deal with it once implemented, but I am looking out for my Aunt as she has little money ! :(

Cheers Guys :¦

When my mum died the funeral director did the pickup from the hospice once the death certificate was signed. That was only a distance of about 20 miles though. Have you spoken to any funeral directors?

Sorry to hear about the loss of your aunts partner galaxy mate.

She may be able to get a grant from the local authority to help with funeral expenses. Not sure if these still exist but tell her to contact, or you contact, the local authority and they will give more advice.

Most funeral directors will take care of all aspects of the funeral arrangements and are probably the best source of accurate information so give them a wee ring.

I would suggest going into ur local CAB tomorrow, go in and wait for them opening at 9 as calls not always answered if they are busy and appointments can take weeks, they will be able to give u all the details u should need

Good Luck

Sorry for the loss.

Another useful tip, is get multiple copies (£1 IIRC) of the death certificate at the time of registering the death, for various Govt bodies, utility companies & insurance as most will only accept an original (again IIRC).

This isnt any help but the asians in our area got together and formed a death committee. every family contributes £5 per year. Should there be a death in the community the committes takes care of everything financially - they also provide 1 ticket plus cargo costs should the body be flown back to pakistan for burial - most of the older generation wished to be buried there.

When it happens multiple copies of the death certificate are got and the funeral directors then take the body to the airport. The air plane company requires another copy of the certificate as well for transport.

The committee was set up as when a muslim dies you are supposed to bury the body as soon as possible - within hours. The only time the body is buried the next day is if they died after 6pm and the cemetary is shut.
