How did you end up doing what you do for a living?

penzance (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 13th December 2005, 03:12

Having just moved to the USA and adjusting (poorly, for now), I have to find a new career, well when I am able to work which won`t be for another 3 months due to silly immigration laws. Well being bored out of my mind I was wondering how you ended up doing what you do for a living as some people fall into things and others have a plan that works out perfectly...I can`t even decide what I want to do yet and I am getting very nervous and yes scared. I am 26 and I have not had a proper career yet which makes me feel crappy for some reason, and my cv is just a load of temp jobs.

I guess after my ramblings all I am wondering is whether you ended up doing what you always wanted to do or thought you would do, or are just in a completely different job than you expected.

How many of you actually enjoy your job?

Desperation, it was either that or move back down to the Midlands, but I`ll be leaving next year to become a full time foster carer.

I always wanted to be a graphic designer ...afterleaving school in 1990 and after years of doing nowt and just Djing.. I eventuallygot a job in a local newspaper in 1999...and now.. it`s the last thing i want to do.. so I`m in my final year of a degree in English and film (whilst still at the newspaper) and I hope to get on a PGCE in Secondary English.. so .. looks like teaching is the career for me at the ripe old age of 33

Wanted to study physics, but failed the exam ....twice (doing worse the second time around!) and was forced into studying statistics.

It`s the best thing that ever happened to me. I`m in my final year of a PhD and really enjoying it. After that i want to bcome a consultant.

I find that these things generally work themselves out for the best.

Luck rather than judgement. Im basically where I am through a series of `Last in First out` redundancies and my job as an IT consultant (specialising in databases and electronic branding) came up in the right place at the right time.

They shot an albatross for good luck before I signed my contract, though.....

I left university, made a coporate video which funded me for a good while, and towards the tail end of it I started applying for film based jobs.

Based on a good CV, I was offered a few jobs and went for one with the company I am with now, working as a Production Assistant (and managing corporate projects).

It`s all fell into place quite well really. :D

Giggity giggity!

Not too far from my story.
After leaving school in 1997 i went to art college- btec national diploma in general art and design- second year specialism in graphic design. 2 year full time course

To supplement my income i worked temping in the print trade. Worked for Xerox for four months.

A year/ half after leaving college, filled with the dole and some temp jobs (teleasales (very, very briefly ;)..,.) portering, postroom, print, i got a job as a post/print/archive room op in mid 2000 working at a market research firm in islington. After six years under the same employment, working at different sites (im a contractor) im now a print facility manager for an investment banking firm in the city... cushty.

Do a bit of DJing now and again. Also training to be a sparks. Woo!

When leaving school i wanted to be a `Tax Man`, but was told by the career advisor i would have to wait until i was 18 to sit Inland Revenue Examinations to to do something else for a couple of years... i worked part time in a garden centre cafe... so:

Went to college to learn to be a chef... because i had O`levels (shows his age) i had to do a BTEC Diploma in Catering Management... then went on to do an HND in Catering Management... leaving colleage at 20.

Worked in a Hospital whilst at college and for while after as a Catering Supervisor...

then went to work for Woolies... as a Catering Manager for about 18 months, before becoming a Store Manager, which i did for just under another 7 years...

then got poached to work for Superdrug as a Store Manager which i did for another 3 years...

for six months of this period i went to Iraq on Op TELIC (life changing experience and all that jazz), and when i came back decided there was more to life... so i decided to look for a new challenge...

and thats how i got to do what i do now... totally by mistake!

A career i never even contemplated 5 years ago let alone when i was at school!
