Tesco & Wharfedale problem

I telephoned Tesco helpline tonight regarding Wharfedale 750 problem with Jaws, they advised to use GOTO buttons and advised there isnt a upgrade because it is the DVD that has a problem. Can anybody tell me if they have called this helpline and your experiences.
DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE BEST TO TAKE THE PLAYER TO A STORE.

Tesco`s are copping out of their responsibilities here, Aturi.

We all know that there are so-called `problem discs`, particularly with budget players. However, that doesn`t detract from Tesco`s main purpose here - they are the retailer, therefore they are fully, 100%, responsible when things go pear-shaped.

Your suggestion of taking the player back to the store is realistic, and perhaps the only way you might get something done here. Unfortunately, Tesco`s won`t be able to fulfill their part of the Sales of Goods Act 1979, as amended 1994, by either (a) offering to repair the player (as they, probably quite rightly, state there is no way they can fix it; or (b) swapping the player as they don`t stock the discontinued 750 anymore.

Don`t let them fob you off with feeble answers about it being the `disc`s fault` - fact of the matter is the player don`t do what it says it ought to on the tin. Ergo, it is faulty.

They should, by rights (and I mean consumer rights), swap the player for one of equal value. This probably means you`ll end up with either an LG player or a Wharfedale M5. I suggest you take whichever you see fit, but be warned : the M5, sadly, is a bit hit or miss (see my website http://www.area450.co.uk, especially the forums, for stories of dodgy disc drives), whereas the LG player may not offer the same functionability as either your 750 or the M5.

Whatever you do, stand your ground, remain calm, but don`t leave the store until you either have a new player or a guarantee that they will contact the distributor of `Jaws`. Alternatively, agree to accept another copy of `Jaws` (if things don`t seem to be going your way) and try that one out - would other 750 owners care to comment here as to whether they`ve had problems with this particular disc ?

Don`t worry mate - consumer law is on your side !!!

Tescos have to either,

Fix it (unlikley now as the 750 is discontinued (thank the PS2 for that))
Replace it (ie with the 750S)
Give you a refund.

I phoned the helpline and got a load of flannel so I took it back to the shop. Just stride confidently to the customer services desk and tell them it doesn`t play some disks / has stopped working / whatever.
I got a swap for an LG3000 and a £30 refund. My wharfy 750 was unboxed, scratched and I`d forgotten the remote..... they didn`t care.

I even sold the remote on Yahoo for a tenner !!! Result.

Have dialled the helpline, but they asked for receipt details, i dont have
these, so they asked me to ring the branch i bought it at. done that but i
bought from there in Feb 2000 i think, they canna find anything. So does
this mean i`m screwed?????

any ideas what to do next anyone????????????

do you think its best to go to the store?
I wanted the M5 if anything.

IS THE LG ANY GOOD CAN YOU REGION FREE IT, PLAY RCE DISCS

I tried phoning the "helpline" too. Basically refused to upgrade the firmware, and even told me just to take it to a local TV repair store - "it`s not our responsibility", apparently.

Got mine feb last year too (it`s a 750) - probably got the reciept somewhere still. Would prefer to have a firmware uprgade, but would settle for the M5 (not the LG)

I`ll probably take it back to the store - the "helpline" (sarcastic chortle), wasn`t particulary....well, helpfull!

Fair dinkum, it was a bargain player though!

Under the Sale of Goods Act you do NOT need a reciept if the goods are faulty.

The sale of Goods Act covers you for up to 6 years (length depends on value of goods, so a £150 dvd player might get 12 - 18 months), but the manufacters warranty is in addition to the cover given by the sale of goods act.

Tesco do have a firmware upgrade (I`ve got had it installed two weeks ago after months of waiting). But since Tesco developed the upgrade themselves I don`t think you will get it elsewhere.

When I asked for the upgrade back in Feb, they said they were still waiting for stock which was ordered back in Nov 2000 (It only arrived this month ie May. At a guess that stock is running low, hence the new policy of asking for the receipt (since it is the first batch of players which benefit most from the upgrade)
