Tears Of The Sun and The Hard Word...

chewie (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 16th September 2003, 20:20

Saw these at the weekend and just wanted to chime in my quick thoughts and see if anyone else has seen them/wants to see them :)

Tears Of The Sun is an ok Military Rescue mission kind of film starring Bruce Willis. It has a quick start with literally no introduction to the main characters, in this case a team of marines.. They have the mission and that`s that. It sort of lulls for about half an hour where there is not much happening, but as soon as Bruce decides to do the `right` thing, it gets better. Not as gun-ho as you might think. A little too sentimental in places, although it does try to get a message across, if a little clumsy. It came out ages ago in America but only just got a cinema release in the UK. If you like military stuff you may like this. I thought it was good entertainment and will probably get the DVD in the sales. 6/10

The Hard Word is an Australian film. I knew f*ck-all about it before watching it, and I`m glad I didn`t. Good fun all round if you ask me. It stars Guy Pearce and Joel Edgarton (who plays Owen Lars in Attack Of The Clones ;) ). It`s basically a heist film but it does play around with the formula enough to give it a fresh feel. It has plenty of humour and a good pace to keep you entertained, with some good performances. I know this phrase is becoming a bit of a cliche, but if you enjoyed Oceans 11 (the remake) then you should like this. Although it is a bit more violent and expletive-filled than Oceans 11. And at least the Aussie`s know how to use the word "c***" properly, unlike our American friends. ;) 8/10

Anyone else seen them?

Got Tears of the Sun a few months back on region 1, and I have to say I quite liked it. It`s kind of like Platoon crossed with Black Hawk Down (both of which are much better). It does lull at the start, but the explosive finale was dazzling.

Tears of the Sun is vomit inducing American propaganda to show Americans that it is worthwhile having forces in nasty parts of the world and that the number of soldiers dying is worth it in the scheme of things.

OK, the film had its moments, but pass the sick bucket. Far too much long dwelling slow-mo shots of suffering etc. Bruce Willis should know better.

3/10

Went to see The Hard Word on Friday night, good call that Chewie. I thought it was great, probably my favourite film of the year so far.

It was a shame there were only about 12 people in the Cinema, its not been open long has it ? Go see it folk, it`s a good one.

Glad you enjoyed it :)

Yeah, it hasn`t done very well at the box office (I think there was about 12 people in the cinema when I went to see it too). Can`t really expect it to perform well though, since there has been no advertising for it. But I`ll be getting the DVD soon enough :D

We went to see tears of the sun on friday, but found that it has been taken off after just a week, yet pirates of the bl**dy caribean is still on!!! :( Apparantly it has a bigger potential audience, surely hasn`t everyone that wants to see pirates seen it by now?

Yeah, Tears of the Sun didn`t do very well at the UK Box Office. Not surprised because there wasn`t much publicity.
