Starship Troopers 2?

Lee Thews (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 9th March 2003, 19:28

I`ve just read in a magazine that Starship Troopers 2 starts shooting in May, but I didn`t even know they were making a sequel!
Apparently, Phil Tippet is to direct. I`ve just looked on the web for info but couldn`t find anything. Does anybody know anymore about this?

There have been rumblings for a long while, but I haven`t heard anything concrete yet. Casper Van Dien isn`t going to be in it apparently (star could be Clancy Brown), and it may even be straight to video.

Bah! Now why cant someone just do a decent version of the book!!! While the original film was fun the book was much more dark and serious...oh and they also had cool as power armour and jump jets! :)

The training excercises in the film are pussies compared to the stuff in the book! Basically think Full Metal Jacket...in space! :)

Particularly liked the fact that in the book the system of government was created by a bunch of war veterans from Scotland! :D

The book is very different to the film, defo worth a read.

Rumour has it that Jim Cameron asked his cast to read the book before shooting Aliens. Nothing against Aliens, I love the film, but if you think about it there are quite a few similarities!

It`s a good read and I think Verhoeven did a decent enough job with the film. Okay, it`s not in the same league as Robocop, but that would be asking a lot.

As for a sequel?…

It might have worked with Verhoeven back at the helm but with his absence, I`m not so sure. Apparently he was interested in Robocop2 but was never approached! Proof enough? Then maybe Starship Troopers2 should be left alone.

I saw Robocop again a few weeks ago and it is remarkably similar both in style and humour to Starship Troopers. Both can easily be taken as genuine satire on the state of America and its culture.

Sequels by different directors usually suck though don`t they, although there are a few examples of where they didn`t, such as Aliens, Superman 2, Blade 2...

At least if it turns out to be straight to video none of us have to even hope it will be any good. :)
