My (very) old, newest pickup

mbilko (Elite) posted this on Friday, 19th January 2024, 00:56

Well after playing old spectrum Atari and commodore games on the Steam Deck I thought wouldn't it be great to have my old speccy again, 2 days later found this bad boy on the salesroom but wanting £60.99 for shipping if I won it I thought thanks but no thanks, then I noticed it was Glasgow auction house McTears, low and behold not only did I get it much lower than guide price but only cost me £10 on train to pick up :)

SD card solution for Spectrum software storage. Plugs into the interface slot, and stick all your Tap and Z80 files onto an SD card, stick into the interface and get instaload. No more worrying about getting the volume right on the tape deck, or dodgy disk drive heads after 35 years.

I would use this

https://archive.org/details/zx_spectrum_tosec_set_september_2023

Basically everything Spectrum which isn't copyright blocked is packaged to download. When I downloaded the 2017 collection, it was just under 3GB. It looks a fair bit larger now, but you get multiple versions of various software.

If you want a curated experience to browse through, there is World of Spectrum,

https://worldofspectrum.org/

or Spectrum Computing

https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.php

Plenty of 48k and 128k sized chunks of data to download and stick onto an SD card... or try in an emulator like Fuse if you're that way inclined.

That is my Speccy experience these days. I feel I daren't try my toastrack. It's been decades since I last put power to it, and the capacitors have probably melted, and the keyboard membrane will be goo at this point.

I had the specky decades ago, still remember the smell of burning of the silver paper printer as it printed out basic code. It was the future LOL.

Lots of good games, I remember Ant attack, where giant mutant ants were on the rampage. Also some sort of Wizard/Camalot game, where the wizard went through the landscape via portals on a quest. It was amazing stuff back in the day.

That sort of thing, yes, although I don't see any joystick ports on it, which would be of use on games which aren't compatible with Plus 2's internal ports, and I also don't see a pass through connector for other interface devices, which could also help, if you want to do more than just gaming.
