LCD TV or Monitor for XBOX 360??

Nick Shepherd (Elite) posted this on Friday, 11th January 2008, 16:01

Got a 360 but a standard CRT TV and am struggling to see much detail (Fifa).

Dont want to buy a replacement HD TV for my main CRT just yet so what are my options for a display just for the XBOX 360. Must have sound and be cheap!!

Was thinking 19` wide would be big enough then it can have its own room etc but I`m confused about what a monitor is and HD?

Any advice will be great!

Cheers :)

Nick

Nick,

play.com were doing a 19" w/s LG TV/Monitor for around 169 sheckles
just before christmas. it doesn`t have HDMI but does have component
input as well as VGA so could therefore be used as a PC monitor too.

a regular 19" w/s monitor would be a bit cheaper but you have the hassle
of then getting hold of a xbox VGA cable and then having to sort out audio
(unless you have an amp).

*edit**

decent range of TV/Monitors on their site....the samsung pebble looks ok.

So do i want a monitor or a TV? If a TV, should it be HD with HDMI or is that not needed to get the best out of the 360? :)

Nick,

if your 360 is the HDMI model (zephyr / falcon mobo iirc) then go for a tv/monitor
which supports HDMI.

there are a lot of HD ready set`s out there which will offer component and VGA
compatibility....there is a (slight) difference between the quality of picture when
using the 3 types of input.

personally, i prefer HDMI as the picture (on our telly) looks a bit sharper than
when using component which imo, seems to oversaturate the colour and
consequently makes games look a bit more "cartoonish".

VGA is a good alternative because M$ have apparently issued an update which
allows you to alter the colour saturation of RGB to your own preference.
initially, VGA output was very washed out. VGA also allows your DVD`s to be
upscaled to the native resolution of the tv/monitor that you`re using.

at the end of the day, it will come down to how much you want to pay...
£200 will get you a decent 19" tv (with monitor capabilities) which will
have HDMI / component / VGA conectivity.

Must admit that since being forced to use the component ports that colour/sharpness isn`t as good as the HDMI (sound kept cutting out on HDMI for a couple of seconds every few minutes, usually right in the middle of a cut scene on Assassins Creed so I have no idea what`s going on). Xbox got sent for repair yesterday, but I`d go for a TV/Monitor with HDMI port every time (if you`re xbox has HDMI).

Was looking at a spare tv around 19-20 inch myself. There`s a 20" samsung one knocking about for just over 200 (ebuyer I think with free delivery). Not sure how good they are, but sainsburys had 2 different 19" models, one with inbuilt dvd, one with digital tv for 169-179 notes.

I was recently looking at reviews of some of those £200 Samsnung TV/monitors.from what I read I get the impression, the are LCD PC monitors, with tuners. so if you`re using it with a PC it`s great, same with hdmi, BUT if you`re using it as a regular TV to watch normal sd tv, they don`t look that great.

Thanks everyone, I think i`m understanding it better now.

My 360 is an Arcade (Has HDMI and the newer benQ drive and 175w power brick, 65nm chip I hear, still think is dam noisy mind).

So any LCD with HDMI will be right, just the more I spend the better the quality I guess?

Cheers :)

not necessarily, but try and find a few reviews on whichever model
you decide you like...there`s always someone who has a moan
about something or other!!

Companies that have p**sed me off so much that I will never use them again and I hope you dont either....
Jacks Fish & Chips of Cambridge ridiculously overpriced and overpackaged chips. £1.20 for a stupidly small portion of chips - they need to go up north for a good lesson in fish and chips
Alloy Bodies of Manchester - The Grand Daddy & Benchmark for shockingly poor customer service.
Capital Bank Leasing who are part of [B]BOS
& are f**ing useless & struggle to action the smallest request but are fantastically efficient at taking money out of my account
[B]Abbey National
Absolutely diabolical service - how hard is it to change £60 of coins into notes????
....more coming soon no doubt.....

Seen the Samsung Pebble 19` SM932MW on ebuyer for £194. Have heard its best to match the resoloution as near as possible. This one is 1440x900.

What is the Xbox 360 and does it acctually matter?

There is a Samsung Sycmaster, 22` with 1680x1050 for £45 more. Worth it is it??
