Do you think buying an xbox is a waste?

penzance (Competent) posted this on Friday, 28th October 2005, 16:30

Having just moved to the USA I sold my xbox and games etc. A new xbox here is $150. An xbox 360 is around $500-600. With half life 2 coming out, as well as far cry staring me in the face and battlefield 2, battlefront 2 etc, etc I am having a hard time not buying one. But I feel I should wait and get a 360 and put the $150 towards it...ahhh! Should I buy an xbox? I am having serious FPS withdrawal symptoms :)

I would wait for the xbox 360 because its backwards compatible and if you bought a regular xbox, it would feel like a real waste of cash when the the 360 comes out (a friend bought a plasma tv and 2 months later, HD ready screens started coming out, what a bummer) so get the 360, relax and enjoy

only the "full" 360 system is backwards compatable (ie you need the hard drive) & even then not all original x-box games are gonna work on the 360, you also need to download a patch for each original x-box game to work, & not all games are gonna be supported, so don`t expect to just stick your old xbox games in & work because unfortunately they won`t :(

There are only 2 Xbox games that are confirmed as ready to roll on the Xbox 360 - Halo and Halo 2, and even then, as Ogster says, you`ll need a hard drive for the X360 to emulate the Xbox.

The lack of backwards compatibility support is thanks to Microsoft choosing to run with ATI for the 360 hardware, which makes Xbox games designed for the Nvidia graphics of the Xbox, "not instantly compatible".

For what it`s worth, I`d go with an Xbox. This generational leap is unlike any other... Your Xbox will not be as redundant as some make out.

I don`t quite understand this statement......do u have some extra info?
Is the leap not as great as say PS to PS2? I know the graphics on the PS2 were made out to be virtually photo-realistic when it first came out and we obviously know now that they are far from it.

As for whether getting the X-box would be a waste......I would say no.The price of the games is going to continue to fall as the new one arrives. You can already pick up good games e.g Project Snowblind for £4.99.
The proper X-box 360 kit with a few games is going to cost 4 or 5 hundred quid to start with.
I am going to wait a few months until they start doing good packages with a few games bundled.....and there will start to be second hand ones about, and the original release games should reduce in price.....hopefully anyhoo.... :D
In 6 months time u should be able to save that $150 dollars on a good X-box 360 set-up.

I don`t want to cover old ground (has the next generation come too soon? ... yadda yadda yadda) but considering the quality of the games, the haste in releasing a replacement, the sheer strength and support for the online contingent and the `only` incremental leap in presentation, I doubt very much that the majority of Xbox gamers are going to throw down their Dukes in unison and *shun* their Xbox for a flash new piece of kit that really doesn`t do much more than their Xbox. At least not straight away.

For what is worth, OP, I recently bought a Gamecube - my first. There`s loads of games I`ve always wanted to play that are GC exclusives, it was within my budget and... holding it makes me feel like a giant.

I don`t think buying into this generation`s hardware is a waste. If you reckon you can get your money`s worth out of an Xbox, between back catalogue and uncoming titles, I`d go for it.

for the main part i agree with mathew, & totaly agre that there is plently of life left in the original x-box, & i have no intentions of selling my chipped x-box, But the 360 is still a huge leap forward over the original, in fact the 360 will give even the most powerfull home pc`s a run for there money (for at least the next 6 months) the original x-box runs at 700 odd mhz, whilst the 360 runs a triple 3.2ghz chipset, but as the ps2 has proven, the hardware aint the bee all of selling units, if m$ don`t get some major league games out for it they will get trounced by sony Again when the ps3 arrives.

perdsonaly i`m not really that arsed as long as there are "enough" quality games & that halo 3 is better than halo 2.

ps,,, got owt new for the cube matt ? i`m thinking of getting resi 4,,,,,,,,, + did you know resi 5 is coming to the 360 !!!!!!!!

Like you say, unless there is a serious arsenal of AAA titles within the first six months, you might be left playing buggy, rushed for release games and multi-format games that only look marginally better on the X360 over the Xbox version. But hey, at least X360 owners can impress their mates.

Owner: This is my new Xbox 360. It does a squillion-million polygons and is 8,000 times more powerful than the sun.

Mate 1: Yup
Mate2: Yup
Mate 3: *takes a swig of beer* Yup....

Owner: No decent games yet, but look how shiny it is... so... you guys wanna play a Halo 2 deathmatch?

On the Gamecube front, I got Resi 4 - that`s what I`m playing just now. F***ing brilliant! Can`t recommend it enough. And Resi 5 is coming to the PS3, too. I think it`s just that with the X360 on the horizon, Capcom have decided to align the teaser hype with a console that`s not months and months off. It doesn`t seem to be an exclusive anyway, so hopefully everyone should get the chance to play next-gen Resident Evil at some point, regardless of their console of choice! :)

To be honest, so will the latest generation of XBOX games.
Like you say, it`s 700Mhz and the graphics card is waaaay out of date compared to what you can get now for a PC - but it just shows you how good you can make a game look when you`re working on a stable, `frozen` platform..
