Cabin in the Woods

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Thursday, 19th April 2012, 21:56

I haven`t laughed this much at a movie in a good way for a while.

5 stereotypical kids for the genre (Slut, Jock, Geek, Stoner, Virgin) go out to a cabin in the woods for a weekend of wholesome fun and friviolity. Truth or dare ensues, and a cellar is found. Going into the cellar, they discover a whole trove of artifacts, puzzle boxes, spooky stuff, and a diary, with some latin, which the virgin chick reads....

Hold up on that there car wash. For all is not what it seems, and you`ll have probably ascertained something`s amiss if you`ve seen the trailer. The trailer`s taken some stick for revealing too much about the underlying plot, but it had to. Else everyone would have thought it was just another same old same old, but it`s far from.

Heavy spoilers from here on. And I mean HEAVY. Don`t read on if you intend to watch the flick and hate spoilers, cos I`m giving away the ending

SPOILER:
Turns out the 5 have been pre-selected for a sacrifice, and have been prepped unknowingly in advance for their weekend away. The sacrifice is one of many arranged all around the globe in order to appease the `ancients` the titans that ruled the planet before we turned up. Turns out all that junk in the cellar was a jumble sale of resurrection atifacts for a plethora of `cabin in the woods` movie staples (Ghosts, wolfmen, mermen, and in the case of our bunch, a zombie redneck torturing family), and it`s merely random choice that decides which beastie they get.

But what`s happening in the cabin is only part of the film, and in fact, only 25% of the entertainment. What`s happening behind the scenes makes the movie, and provides most of the laughs, most of which comes from the completely normal way the `puppeteers` treat the horrors that are unfolding above ground.

Bits to watch out for: when Dana hits `Purge`, and the surprise cameo, which is slightly ruined as the person concerned seems to be cameo queen at the moment, and her voice gives her away

Honestly, best time I`ve had in the flicks for a while

As a horror film wuss, should I steer clear?  I`m trying to educate myself in the joys of modern horror movies without a lot of success as I find you really have to "get" these movies to enjoy them.  I`ve just about got my head round the "Final Destination" movies - you have to treat them as splatstick - but I still find pictures like the Screams, the Saws and the like turn my wind-up key too much and I find them too stressful to enjoy.

The impression Cabin gives me is of an unholy cross between something like Texas Chainsaw and Westworld.

It`s not too bad actually. There are jump-scares, obviously enough, but you see them coming a mile off, and while there IS blood-letting, it`s not in the Final Destination/Saw vein. Most of it`s actually off camera (it IS a 15 certificate, after all)

I had a read of the Wiki entry on the movie and it sounds like fun. I`m a long time Joss Whedon fan, and hearing this is his allergic-reaction-take on torture porn movies (a fair bit ofthe stuff I write is an allergic reaction to a movie) makes me want to see this more.

Problems with the blu-ray release over here. A bad file was used for the burn, making it freeze over 10 times during playback. A new copy is being rushed out ASAP, hopefully within the next two weeks. Second whedon-related blu-ray snarl up in as many weeks. oops indeed
