Star Wars Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace on VCD

meastwoo (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 6th October 2001, 11:05

Has anyone got Star Wars Episode 1 on VCD ? I would like to know if its any good and what are the main differences between the DVD and VCD version. I have not bought any VCD discs yet but my player can play them. This VCD disc seem to be pretty cheap in Hong Kong (www.coolashop.com) and is available now.

I`ve spent too much on DVDs recently and its cheaper than the DVD Version. I just wondered if it is still good quality and sound on VCD.

Um, I would still get the dvd version... its meant to be one of the best DVD`s done so far in terms of picture, audio (which many are calling the best D.D. 5.1. sound mix done for DVD) and most importantly features... plus the film itself is longer than previously released versions...

Ok, those main differences:
DVD:

New video transfer (far superior picture)
DD 5.1 EX Surround
Additional 3 minutes of footage inserted into the film

And 6 hours of extras that are far too numerous to list here, but 25 mins of new deleted scenes and an apparently superb documentary are among them...

The VCD just has an old film transfer and surround sound... it just doesn`t cut it compared to the new DVD release. If there is one DVD that must be bought this year, its this one, and I`m not even a fan of the film!!!

Thanks for the info. I have decided to get this on DVD when I have the cash (Christmas ??). It`s probably worth paying a little extra for the features and picture sound quality.

By the way have you come across the Year 2000 edition official Star Wars Trilogy on VCD ? I noticed this on the same web site also.

Have you ever considered checking out the "Features" section of this site ?!?!?!?

There`s a review of the entire Star Wars VCD collection:

Try that.
