Superman SE R2 - Skippiness

TinnionA (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 19th February 2004, 08:30

Like the heading says - it is very skippy in several places. I was wondering if this was just my computer or if other people have had this problem?

It is new BTW, so no scratches or anything to cause it.

The reason for the skipping is because you are using the dvd on a computer which has a dvd drive that runs at a faster speed than dvds are designed for. Dvds are only designed for 1x dvd drives not one which are 10x and above. The dvd drive is running the dvd faster than the dvd is supposed to be run at which is why it pauses so it will slow down because it was running at a higher speed than was needed.

This happened to me when I used to watch dvds on my PC, but did only happen sometimes and I did not find out the reason for it until last year. The dvd should work fine if you use it on a normal dvd player and there should be no skipping.

I have the film on dvd as well and it does work fine on a normal dvd player as well as my xbox. The skipping problem happens for the reasons stated in my previous posting and I have had that problem when using the PC to play dvds most noticably on Jurasic Park where it kept on skipping during the scene where the T Rex is chasing the jeep. That does not happen on a normal dvd player and is caused by the dvd drive going too fast and then slowing down suddenly to go to the correct speed.

odd, i`ve never noticed any problems on my PC DVD player. in fact my PC is better than my mormal DVD player as it never has the layer hop on it.

Well it is just this DVD. GTA:Vice City also has a similar problem on my PC with the Radio stations.

What happens(only chapters 24 to about 27 on the DVD(the rest plays perfectly)) is it`ll get to a point in a scene, the DVD drive will go whirrr, the computer stops for about 1 minute and then resumes somewhere reasonably close.

I tried a £7 Lens cleaner kit(£7? What a rip off!) and it did improve matters a bit.

I`m actually a bit suspiscious of the DVD itself now because it is in exactly the same place.

Another problem I have with this DVD is that when using the PCFriendly software the picture is very white in the film itself.

I am using PowerDVD 4.0 XP, with a fairly hefty spec PC (XP 2600+ 512MB Ram, 128MB GF4MX 440 and so on). Hardware acceleration is disabled.

Edit: I fixed it with a clean install and enabling hardware accelearation.
