matrix question (got a little confused)

peter parker (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 16th October 2003, 20:33

just seen it for the first time and loved it, but i kinda lost the plot during the last part where neo meets the matrix bloke and hese telling him how its the 5th time this has happened and how he must choose so many people to live while all the rest must die and all that.
whats going on there? or is that something that will get explained in the next movie or even when i watch reloaded again...

I think everybody got confused here. I try to understand it, but really don`t know what the hell the old codger is going on about. Perhaps he is senile? Anyway, I`m pretty sure it will all be answered for us in Revolutions.

Oh and glad you loved it - its a great film!

I understood that he said that this was a cyclical occurrence and that `the One` was a system error generated during the running of the Matrix. This error effectively releases people from the Matrix until the number of people released creates a threat to the Matrix. The One must then return to the source at which point he selects the 20 odd people to live and the rest of Zion is destroyed. Then the cycle starts again. As the One is created automatically by the system there has to be a purpose for him, hence the 20 odd people are allowed to live. Neo is the 6th incarnation of this error, although he seems to be different as he is `faster than the others`. I would guess his love for Trinity will end up being the differing factor.

As a side issue I thought the film was much better viewed the second time around as per the original and I reckon the Orgy was an integral part of showing the difference between humans and machines and hence essential to the plot. After all how many people when asked `you have 24 hours to live, what will you do?` won`t opt for a bit of sweaty action? ;)

I`m too old for this sh*t!

There are plenty of websites that have analysed the "architects speech" and given some
valuable understanding. Search for "matrix reloaded architect"

Here`s 1 of them

Or summed up in one word: Twaddle.

I`m really not too bothered about seeing Revolutions now, the second film totally spoiled it for me.

Now LOTR....thats another story.

Neal,
Don`t forget how confusing the original Matrix was when that came out, resulting in many arguments obver a beer. I think Reloaded offered some clarification whilst then offering some more complexity=confusion. I think (and hope) that Revolutions will complete the circle and will make sense of Reloaded. I for one am looking forward to the conclusion, then I will judge whether I have been let down!

And LOTR is another story, otherwise it would also be called the Matrix :D

I`m too old for this sh*t!

I preferred the more in depth explanation. As Riggs said, Neo`s powers are the eventuality of an anomaly in the programming of the Matrix. The anomaly occurs because the machines have to give humans a choice between accepting and rejecting the program, although it`s at a near unconscious level so most people are oblivious to it.

Because the machines know that the anomaly will eventually occur, they have created another system of control, the prophecy of the One, to ensure that each anomaly does what they want it to do - return to the source and disseminate their code. Once done the Matrix is reloaded, presumably in an upgraded form ensuring the time between anomalies grows longer after each cycle. Zion is necessary to ensure that the One fulfils his/her purpose - if the One has no purpose he/she would essentially become what Agent Smith now is: a virus.

It would seem that the sixth anomaly, Neo, is somewhat different to the previous anomalies. This is presumably because of his love for Trinity, which overwhelmed his logic and reasoning causing him to deviate from the path of the One.

To be honest I didn't think that The Two Towers was a better middle film than Reloaded at all. Parts of it dragged like buggery, and there was far more shoddy CGI (something that people moan about in Reloaded).

It was all verbal bollocks, the final chapter will turn out to be that everything outside the matrix is a programme, as well and Neo and all the other heroes.

You have no idea how wrong you are. Haven`t you even seen the trailer for Revolutions?

To start another line of thought. How about..

Every event in the films happens within another matrix that is completely stable, and that no human knows about. Maybe one human came close to finding out the truth, and the Uber-Matrix created another one just to satisfy the suspicions of a select few, then let them get on with it, thinking they were freeing themselves and others, while all the time being safe and snug in their liquid-filled pods.
