DVD Packaging

Mix Man (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 27th August 2002, 13:03

Does anyone out there know why DVD`s do not come packaged in CD-type covers?

I believe that the current packaging is just a waste of storage space, and there is no logical reasoning (as far as I can see) for this. Yes, the DVD`s occasionally come with a booklet, but these could be printed in the smaller format, just as many CD`s carry multi-page booklets.

Also, does anyone out there "convert" DVD cover packaging (i.e photocopy it and shrink it to the smaller size) so that they can store their DVD`s in CD cases?

Anally retentive I know, but this bugs me!

Same thing occured to me actually - have CDs, DVDs, games etc all in same size cases... very neat! Probably something to do with artwork for films (posters etc) having always been rectangular. Music artwork (LPs, 45s and now CDs has always been square).

From a retailers perspective I guess the problem with putting them in the same packaging as CDs is consumers might get confused.

Personally I like the size of DVD cases, and even prefer games to come in that size!

The DVD cases are the shape they are to continue on from the size of VHS boxes, which were roughly the same height as a DVD case.

This means everyone`s shelf of films looks more organised.

I actually prefer them to CD cases for the simple reason that they seem to be more robust (well the Amaray ones anyway). I have a load of smashed CD cases that have either dropped and broke, or smashed when I leaned on it or something pathetic like that.

I reckon the main reason is probably to distinguish them from actual CDs as Robert says.

I think there is not one thing wrong with DVD covers They are not a waste of space. Answer this question: Every good DVD comes with a booklet with all the scenes and sometimes even a special features disc like Gladiator, Independence Day, Lord of The Rings and lots of others. Where would the disc and booklet go? They certinley would not fit into CD covers so think about that.
