4mp Camera - £49.99

Doh! (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 9th December 2004, 22:58

Was in Tescos today and saw they had a Vivitar 4mp digital camera for £49.99.

Believe model is V3815.

2x Digital zoom only.

Anyone know if this is any good? :/

Only for kids, IMHO. Wouldn`t matter if the camera was 8 megapixel, it`s still a £49.99 camera - RUBBISH

Digital cameras are much more than just `how many pixels`. There`s the quality of the optics and then the image chip itself. Most cheaper cameras use a CMOS chip rather than the better CCD. The CMOS chips can be found on most camera phones - enough said!

If you want a digital camera for you and your family to use, do yourself a favour and spend at least £100 on a quality brand name like FUJI, OLYMPUS, PENTAX, etc. A friend at work bought a `cheapy`. When he compared it to mine, he was disapointed and regreted not spending the extra. He ended up chucking it away and upgrading only months afterwards.

This one uses a CMOS chip and is far from a cheap camera!

Agree with the general point though - it`s best to avoid the cheap cameras. The quality of the lens and the imaging chip (as you`ve said) are the main determinants of how good the picture will be.

Determinants? That`s a made-up word, surely?

Gotta agree with those sentiments - we bought a 4mp Trust camera which was fine indoors. But if anything had sunshine on it you just ended up with "white".

Basically it was four mega pixels, but 4 mega pixels of rubbish.

Nah, not at all! I don`t know about an exact dictionary definition, but a determinant is basically an influencing factor, something that determines the outcome.

Having owned 4 digital cameras and having compared pictures with many people using various makes and models I have always found the Olympus range to be one of the best, after all they have been making cameras for years and frankly the quality shows, I have compared pictures with multiple makes of cameras including fuji and the olympus always seems to be as good or better I think as has been said much of it is down to the lens quality

If you want to come after me you`ll find me in Newport Pagnell but be warned I know karate, Judo, Kung-fu and several other dangerous words

This camera is great for £49.99, it`s small, durable, lightweight and best of all takes great shots. It`s RRP is £99.99, and it`s on sale in ASDA for £89.99, so for £49.99 its a bargain. All i would say is don`t buy the 64mb memory card from Tesco for £20.00, it`s to expensive.
