Clearout CD bargains at Splash

Jon_C (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 8th May 2003, 02:58

Here are the ones I ordered tonight (p&p is free):

CURE `WISH` @ £3.48
U2 `BEST OF 1990-2000 2CD` @ £6.73
BLACK SABBATH `PARANOID` @ £3.23
ORB `LIVE 93` @ £3.48
JIMI TENOR `HIGHER PLANES` @ £4.73

But there are quite a few other bargains to be had, such as the Rolling Stones` `40 Licks` 2CD for less than £7. Lots of cack too (even at £3.50, the Gary Glitter 2CD set doesn`t seem to be shifting for some reason...) but such is the substance of a clearout.

Seeing as no mention of Splash can be made without someone getting on their high horse about how Splash ran over their cat or whatever, I`ll cut out the need for such postings by warning those who haven`t used Splash before that:

(a) because these CD clearouts tend to be massive and with quite substantial discounts, stocks occasionally run out very quickly (which is the whole point of a clearout anyway) and
(2) high demand sometimes means that Splash can take slightly longer than CD Wow or Play to deliver sale orders. My own experience with Splash has been pretty good, however - around a dozen items ordered within the past three months and all but one delivered within 10 days.

I have to say I totally agee with Denon. I placed an order with Splash on April 1st, had my card debited on April 4th, and I`m still waiting for the goods. Here`s an e-mail I sent them a while back...

"This is the third time I`ve sent an e-mail to your `customer services` department. Since the e-mail I sent obviously isn`t reaching the department that deals with missing orders, I`ve decided to use some of your other e-mail addresses. I also have a couple of suggestions that would definitely improve your current service...

1. Send customers a confirmation e-mail once their complaint e-mails have been received/acknowledged. At the moment, I have no idea whether someone is looking into my problem or whether my e-mail was deleted upon receipt.

2. Get a couple of extra phone lines installed, or provide a voicemail service where customers can leave details of their problems. I myself have never successfully reached a customer services representative since your line is always engaged.

3. If you cannot despatch items `within 5 - 7 days` as it says on the website, don`t tell your customers you can. In my experience, when other online retailers fail to despatch goods within the time frame they promise, at least they have the decency to inform their customers that there has been a delay. Failing that, they`d at least provide answers to their questions.

4. Don`t debit payments until the goods have been despatched. Please bear in mind that I ordered this item on April 1st (how appropriate!), and the payment was taken from me on the April 4th. Normally, I`d give the retailer the benefit of the doubt, but it`s now been almost four weeks since I placed the order, with no explanation for it`s delay!

I hope these suggestions help. Also, I wonder if someone could find it in their heart to send me some details on my missing order? It might not matter to you since you`ve already taken the payment from me, but I have to say I wouldn`t expect to walk into a high street shop, pay for my goods, then have them placed behind the counter for a month and be ignored when I ask the shop assistant why.

I look forward to your prompt reply.

M. Coleman
(details provided below, in the e-mail you ignored 2 days ago)"

That particular e-mail was sent on April 25th, and surprise surprise, I`ve still heard NOTHING. The prices may well sound tempting, but I urge you to avoid Splash like the plague.

Colemeister.

I agree with you on this, I have phoned them a number of times. I`ve called them when the line has been engaged, redialled straight away and then got a ringing tone that failed to be answered (eventually it timeout on me). This has happened at least 5 times in the last week alone at different times during the day. Obviously someone must be there, but no one answers. It is exactly the same with their email response (or lack of) - I`ve mailled them once a week over the last 5 weeks and never had any kind of response.

I`m still waiting of an order placed 7 weeks ago, that I was charged for within 3 days, the item has continually said it is available within 5 days, yet I still have no idea if I can expect it anytime soon.

If they gave some feedback to people`s queries then at least the service would seem better, but that doesn`t seem to be happening. People can make their own minds up whether to try them or not

I agree as well, cancelled an order with Splash on the 16th April and they still havent credited my card with the amount yet, they were quick to take it from my card though. I will never ever use again, stick to reputable companies such as CDWow and Play.

They have promptly replied to all my emails quickly and I do get to them on the phone (sometimes it takes a few attempts). Surely people are not suggesting that they just choose to answer phone calls from specific numbers and reply to emails from specific addresses? That is just the most whacked out thing I have heard.

What`s the point of having a bargains forum when every time you mention a retailer you`ve had no problems with, the thread gets hijacked by people who pour scorn on your postings?

Surely most shoppers can be credited with enough sense to bear in mind the maxim `caveat emptor`? If you get a CD at half price or less as part of a massive sale, waiting up to two weeks doesn`t seem so unreasonable.

I understand that quite a few people have grievances with Splash and I`m not trying to question your bad experiences but perhaps retailer-related comments should be posted on the retailer reviews forum. Just a thought.

Exactly. The original poster should be given the option of deleting posts from their thread.

Okay, I`ll bear that in mind in future. But to be honest with you, I didn`t even know the Retailer Reviews section existed until you just mentioned it!

But surely it doesn`t so any harm to warn people before they order. I mean, I`m not saying every order placed with Splash DVD is going to be a nightmare, I just posted a warning to let people know that they are very likely to end up without their order being fulfilled up to two months after placing it. You could argue that people should check the Retailer Review forum before placing any order, but f I didn`t know about it, the chances are some other people won`t either.

The fact is, you never get anyone here posting warnings about Play or CD-Wow because those are two companies with excellent reputations, and quite rightly so. These reputations have come about as a result of a service that provides all of the things Splash DVD does not...

1. Good customer service - both in pre and after sale(s).
2. The ability to get a no quibble, no fuss refund.
3. Excellent delivery times.

I`m not going to complain if someone posts a warning about a particular retailer, even if I`m the guy who originally posted the bargain heads-up. If one of these warnings prevents me from getting into another situation like the one I`m currently experiencing with Splash, then that`s fine by me.
