RE: Hostel

I loved it. :D

Hedonistic, brutal, chilling, engaging and ultimately quite cathartic. Roll on the sequel. :)

RE: Free Upgade On Flights

Yes, 18. You can enroll in flight school at that age so it isn`t that unbelievable...for all they know, I could have been doing a PPL. ;) I was wearing a shirt and trousers, too, which probably gave a false impression of maturity and pilot-ness. :D

RE: Free Upgade On Flights

If when you`ve done all your preamble, dressed smartly, been nothing but charming and mentioned your wife`s birthday, nothing has been offered or said about an upgrade...ASK! I have been upgraded several times after asking, so it does work. Normally they will say at check-in that the flight is full, but don`t give up...ask at the gate, or find a nice senior person around the check-in desk (dressed in a different uniform) and be nice and charming with her. You can also try the old chestnut which did actually work for me once - "I`m a pilot, really stressed out...I`m in the simulator first thing tomorrow morning so I`d really appreciate a nice, comfortable seat and a good night`s kip."

Ah right. I also heard a rumour that Donald Sutherland was lined up to play Mr Bauer Sr. but I suppose that is false as well?

RE: Ebay unpaid item advise

Yes, but bear in mind that you will also receive negative feedback in return and lose out on your seller`s fees. If I were you, wait the seven days and then file a claim - that way you`ll recoup your costs and have some form of protection against the inevitable negative feedback. If the buyer has been a member for less than 3 months, any negative feedback he or she leaves will be removed if eBay cancels his account.

RE: The "Official" 24 Season 5 Thread ;)

The first 10 episodes of this season were pretty lacklustre (the season opener being the exception), and it felt like it was going in the direction of Season 4. But, whilst recent episodes have certainly been a lot better, the plotting is still by-the-numbers and all the usual 24 elements are there...it`s getting quite tired.

SPOILER:
Interestingly, one of 24`s creators said in a recent interview that Bauer will die at some point - "it`s the only way to bring such a tragic character to an end". Perhaps someone else will take over as the leading 24 character in the future? I had heard rumours that Edward Norton was in talks for a "substantial" role in a future 24.

What with this and "The Devil`s Rejects", it`s good to see some new directors taking a fresh - and very welcomed - approach to horror.

RE: I`m back...after directing a music video!

I think there is a difference between mentioning it in passing to explain the song`s lyrics, or an interpretation of the song`s lyrics, and actually thrusting it under the audience`s noses. :)

RE: What I watched this week (w/e Sunday, March 26th)

"The Squid and the Whale" - poignant, powerful and very funny; Baumbach might, dare I say it, be a better writer/director than his good friend Wes Anderson

"Elizabethtown" - dreadful first act, amusing second, emotional and cathartic third...Crowe`s latest film is a slight misfire, but then again Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst and the film`s soundtrack are more than value for money

"25th Hour" - arguably Spike Lee`s best film in my book, this underrated gem contains so many good performances - and such a fantastic script - that it will satisfy on many repeat viewings

This week I`m hoping to see "Hostel" or "Inside Man" in the cinema, and "Dog Day Afternoon" and "Walk the Line" on DVD. Incidentally, wossname, I can`t seem to fins 24x514 on the usual sites (hint: bay/the/pirate, rearrange). Where did you get yours?

RE: the proposition

I`ve heard nothing but good reviews for this film so I`m intrigued to check it out. Pearce and Winstone always deliver accomplished performances and it`s nice to see a gritty Western back on our screens again.

RE: I`m back...after directing a music video!

Thanks for the comments, Nick. I feel I should point out that whilst the song is clearly about his struggles with TS, I did also receive strict guidelines from his manager not to harp on, or continuously show, the aspects of the condition because they want to try and market him without gimmicks. With that perspective in mind, the song could simply relate to his social problems connecting with women - hence the lack of visual flairs that could "push the envelope" when it comes to TS.

Is there any way that I could render a good quality video file for ~10MB? I rendered a version at about 30MB which looked a lot worse, with a cloudy image and tinny sound. But, bear in mind that I was rendering these files through Sony Video Vegas and not a professional rendering program.

OK, thanks for the advice. My next three projects will all be in colour, but after that I might dabble with B&W again. :)

RE: I`m back...after directing a music video!

Thanks again for the feedback. As for the video itself, yes there is a "story" of sorts - the beginning mirrors the early parts of his life - very dark, negative, frustrating - and then the girl is the symbolism for him finally finding someone who can accept him for who he is, hence the colours become lighter. The splash of colour at the end is a more obvious example of this. Some of the shots directly link in with the lyrics ("Mum and Dad said I`d be OK" - climbing the stairs etc.) and some others relate to his past experiences which aren`t actually sung about in the song: isolation, alienation, the theme of reflection, how he sees himself etc.

Ben - I`m happy with Vegas and I don`t have the cash to upgrade at the moment. I shot in (black & white) Mini-DV and then edited the colour balance, contrast etc. in the edit.

Good luck with the TV series.

but seriously Rik.. I do admire you determination to be succesful at such a young age.. and there`s no doubt that you are able to put together polished looking stuff... and I think you will do well in the future... but dear me ditch tatham while you still can... how`s yer mate near to a recording contract?.. That song was `orrible...for someone who claims to want to lead a normal life with tourettes .. he certainly harps on about it... how many songs has he written about it now?..

This is the second song he`s written about his condition, although it is essentially a re-recording of the first, "Tourette Blues". If you want to hear his other music, go here - http://www.nicktatham.co.uk/html/music.htm - I think you should at least listen to his other new material before completely dismissing him. (As well as listening to the five latest tracks, I suggest you listen to "Guilt Trip" and "Inside Outside", under "More Tracks", as they are very good as well.)

Quote:
oh.. and why`s he carrying around a guitar when there`s no guitar in that song?..

He sometimes plays an acoustic version of the song...and the guitar is essentially a symbol for his "weapon" or saving grace in life.

Mark - we did indeed shoot some of this in Bournemouth, as well as Sandbanks, Badbury Rings and Wimborne.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback. I`ll bear it all in mind for the next music video I do, which will hopefully be later this year. I also have two short films in pre-production which I am aiming to shoot in July.

I`m back...after directing a music video!

Hi all, I hope everyone is well. :)

Earlier this year I directed a music video for a friend of mine who is currently on the verge of securing a record contract. The single, "Different", was chosen from his demo tape and I have now finished the lengthy editing process.

REMOVED BY REQUEST

The filesize is 78MB, which should take about 10 minutes to load on a broadband connection. It`s advisable to let the entire video load (let the bar go across the screen) before clicking Play to ensure smooth playback.

I hope you enjoy it and I`d welcome any feedback.

RE: Editing problem: Why won`t my rendered AVI file play back correctly on my TV? HELP*

I`m rendering at 720x480 (PAL) and Vegas supports multiple file types; I chose AVI because I have always used it in the past. I think it uses built-in codecs to render the files, although I have specified that it should render the upper field first as opposed to the default lower field because I hear this is better for TV playback.

Would the compression affect the brightness/darkness as well?

Editing problem: Why won`t my rendered AVI file play back correctly on my TV? HELP*

Having just directed a music video, I edited the file in Sony Video Vegas and firstly rendered the video as a Quicktime file (relatively good quality, 78MB). The file is perfect and displays all of the colours as they should be (and as they are in Video Vegas).

When I rendered it to AVI and burned it onto DVD courtesy of Sony DVD Architect, the image went considerably darker (unwatchable in places) and moments of aliasing were apparent in certain shots. I tried again with an MPG file and the same thing happened. I`ve even tried brightening the video and re-rendering it to AVI/MPG but it still appears too dark (or at least not how it should be) and aliasing is still apparent.

I have tried watching the DVD on two different TVs - a Sony 16:9 and a Philips 4:3. The problem was worse on the Sony but neither TVs reproduced the video properly. This sort of thing has never happened to me before and I have been burning DVDs/rendering AVIs for quite a few months. It might be worth mentioning that the video is shot entirely in black and white, with several filters applied to raise the contrast levels and basically make it look more stylised.

What do I do? It`s really frustrating me and I want to get this sorted ASAP. :)

Yeah, and I think that look suits the film well. Mann does have to be careful, however, that he doesn`t crib too much from COLLATERAL or the film will end up being a pale imitation of his last work.
