Converting HD files to play on a DVD player

Bezzawezza (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 25th January 2011, 19:54

Can anyone help with this. I have 2 family members who have each purchased nice shiny HD camcorders. The problem is that once you get the videos off the camcorder burning the files for playback on a standard DVD player (I don`t want to confuse them with Divx players, PS3 and the suchlike) is becoming an issue.
The first problem is that they record in MTS format which will play fine in the software that came with the camera but this doesn`t provide burning functions. If I put the MTS files in Nero or use Windows Live Movie Maker it doesn`t recognise the MTS files.
I have therefore attempted to convert the MTS using Handbrake and "Free MTS Convertor" to MP4 format but this just results in a blocky, stuttering video file. Obviously I expect to lose some quality going from HD to SD but these literally look like they have been taken on a mobile phone when converted (and not a smartphone either!)
Ideally I would like something that you put the HD files in, edit and then burn to a SD DVD but I think I am in dreamland there so maybe just something which will convert MTS without losing too much quality and play smoothly.
Any ideas?

Didn`t the camera come with software to convert to SD?  Mine did.

Super is widely regarded as being a damn fine, and easy to use multi format conversion problem, it gets mentioned a lot, here and elsewhere.

I`ve just got a HTC Desire HD mobile, and was looking for an answer to this same problem.
I have a sumvision cyclone media player [which doesnt support mp4 or 3gp] and was looking at home I could view my videos on my NON DNLA HDTV.
I did convert in Super which produces a blocky video - I always use avi - xvid for max compatibility.
Maybe I need to play with the settings

The mobile records and saves in the 3gp format. I have tried Handbrake and as the cyclones does not support MP4 its output has been a waste of time. [I think think this is geared more towards iphone and itouch users]

Same problem with MTS files from Camcorder - any prog come out in the last 11 months that might help our case.  Once its converted what prog would you recommend for basic holiday editing with an output to dvd for the folks?

Best Wishes
