Linksys Router problem

butters (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 13th December 2006, 19:28

I`m trying to set up my friends router, the ntl stuff is all configured and the Internet works plugging to ntl router to the laptop.

The problem is that trying to set up the wireless router i have the wire going from laptop to linksys router but whenever I type the 192.168.1.1 address no page appears. When I first tried it the menu option came up as normal but my friend didn`t know the password so I reset the router. Now however I plug the router (it has 4 sockets) nothing happens with the laptop (as if it doesn`t know the router is connected).

One time I tried rebooting the laptop then when it rebooted I plugged in the router and turned on the power for the router, it just kept saying that the local area network was unplugged combined with the little symbol of two computers (like on wireless when is acquiring the ip address), this constantly would go on/off/on etc. I have not been able to get it to do this again though (even while this was happening the 198.162.1.1 address still would not work)

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong, it must have had something to do with the reset but i don`t understand what has gone wrong, the menu appeared before so the w router must work :/

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions, thanks in advance

butters

power everyhting down completely.

connect the modem to the routers WAN port (via ethernet cable).
power up the modem and let it settle into standby.
press the "on" button to fully activate the modem.
turn on the router.
connect the (powered up) laptop to one of the routers LAN ports.
it should now aquire an IP address.

click on start>run then type cmd and press enter. at the command prompt
type ipconfig /all to list all IP/DNS details.
make a note of the "default gateway" address....this will be the routers IP address.
go in to internet explorer and type http://192.168.x.x (where x.x are the last
two octets of the routers IP address. press enter and you should now be prompted
to enter a username and password to enter the routers configuration pages.
refer to the routers maual for this information.
