Batman Screening Massacre - 12 Dead, 59 Wounded

Casualties included a four-month-old baby and a six-year-old.  Are we so jaded as an internet community that we`re not shocked and horrified by this?

Maybe if these shootings weren`t such a regular feature in US news we might be a little more shocked.

That said, when I woke up to this news breaking, I did let out a "Holy ****!"

This one`s different.  Previous shootings have been things like mall snipers, disgruntled employees, disgruntled ex-students and the like.  This guy chose a movie theatre.  He bought a ticket, went in with the rest of the audience, so he knew it would be full of families and went to the fire exit and propped the door open while he went back to his car for his weapons. According to sources an AR-15 assault rifle, a Glock 40mm handgun and a Remington 12-gauge pump action shotgun.  Going back into the theatre, he targeted audience members indiscriminately - including at least two children - and when he was finished he went outside and calmly waited for the police to surrender to them.  He was wearing a ballistics helmet and vest, leggings, gloves, throat and groin protectors so nobody was going to harm a hair on his head.

Most nutters-with-guns shoot themselves as a final act.  When we find out what his motives were, it ain`t going to be pretty.

He walked out, still holding his constitutionally-protected weapons, all legally purchased, and waited to be arrested. He will be sectioned under the US version of the mental health act, and probably won`t even stand trial.

NO-ONE will question the right to bear arms, If they do, it will be done very quietly

Question,

WHO THE **** TAKES A 4-MONTH OLD BABY TO A MIDNIGHT SCREENING OF A 160-MINUTE MOVIE?

Honestly? With all due respect, and not wishing to offend anyone?

**** America

I`ve just been over at AICN and had a bombshell moment when I realised why this Aurora, Colorado business has got me so upset.

I think you can call a good number of us on this forum Movie Geeks.  So were the people in that theatre.

I know I`m a movie geek and I`d be proud to be called one.  In the past I`ve queued to see the first screening in my town of a new movie.  I was always there in the audience of the latest Bond movie.  I loved going to the movies and I`m still a movie geek buying DVDs and Blu-rays.

So the massacre in Aurora`s kind of personal. :(

With respect Mark, I think the the bereaved are probably taking it more personally.

Has anyone actually posited a link between the film and the shootings, or is it more of a case that the gunman knew there would be a lot of people there and that his actions would garner a lot of media attention? No doubt some politicians will attempt to use the incident to further their own political agendas though.

Oh, and not to be funny, but you didn`t post this until the early hours of Saturday and it was widely reported many hours before (at least half a day). I don`t think that one has to express shock or disdain for such a heinous act by immediately jumping onto the internet and registering one`s disgust (to unintentionally paraphrase The Simpsons). I know I didn`t. It`s also possible that the reason some people aren`t totally shocked by the shootings is because random acts of violence like this are (sadly) so commonplace in America.

On the Radio news earlier tonight they mentioned that the gunman said he was The Joker.
Didn`t hear the whole report though as I picked a hire up so had to switch off the radio to put the intercom on so no idea if it was a rumour or fact.

It was nothing to do with the film in particular, he just knew there were going to be plenty of victims in a room with very few exits. I just find it hilarious that all the authority figures are urging parents to `talk to their children`.

Bit late for that
