I cant afford Virgin anymore but im confused , what can i do?

richardbradley66 (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 13th November 2007, 19:16

I have virgin cable and it runs my phone, my broadband and my tv and im paying £40 a month which, since illness, i now cant afford..

This is me :

1.... I like tv.......i watch lots but i only watch what is more or less available on freeview so i dont need all those other channels.

2.....I like the internet. I play around for 2 to 3 hours a day, surfing, checking emails but not much downloading of anything, as i watch films from the video shop or buy music/dvds.

3.....I have a home phone (landline) but never use it......i always make and receive calls via my mobile but im not sure if i need to have a landline for the internet as im no expert and dont really understand it.

What im asking you guys is what are my options?

I want the freeview channels, i want broadband but dont need a phone........how much can i get these services for and what can i get? Im sure at £40 a month, theres a way i can get what i want much cheaper.

Please help unconfuse me !!!

Richie.

You can buy a Freeview box for about £20-00 & that will give you over 30 channels + a load of radio as well. Once you`ve bought the Freeview box you don`t pay anything else. You may have to upgrade the ariel, you may not. Broadband: well if you don`t have cable then the only real alternative is a phoneline. The others will give you a better idea of prices etc.

Look around online for the cheapest comparable broadband package, then ring up VirginMedia retentions and say you want to leave because it is too expensive and poor value. State how much the cheaper ISP is, etc, and that you would got to Freeview and want to cancel the phone (you don`t need a landline for the internet, but when you`re looking for a non-cable ISP you would need a phoneline so factor this in when you`re looking for the cheap deal). I would be really surprised if they didn`t offer you a deal - to give you an idea I pay £17.50 for 20Mb plus other discounts on the other services.

The retentions number is 0800 0730591

If you go down to the cheapest (ie Freeview plus a few more) channels on cable then you still get Teleport Replay included in that - I couldn`t cope without that! :D

I just got Virgin 20meg broadband and phone from them - LCD has freeview in-built.

Thinking of dropping the landline as I never use it (but only costin £9 per month)

Virgin do a three for £30 deal. Your broadband speed and TV channel selection will be downsized, but if you only surf for a bit and don;t watch much TV that shouldn`t be an issue. Ring the retentions department and explain the situation. Say that you`re going to leave unless they can give you some incentive to stay.

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like i may have to stay with virgin Chris cos i have looked and looked and having cable means i dont have much chance of bein able to get a cheap broadband so the 3 for £30 maybe my only option :(

If you keep the landline with Virgin they give you free TV

If you take their £11 per month phone line rental you get their TV medium package included with all these channels

If you only use BB for surfing take out their 2Mb service. They are currently offering this for £4.50 see here

I know these offers are for new customers but it`s worth speaking with Virgin Customer services to see what they can do for you

No you can only use the company that cabled your street, it`s all NTL now (who then bought Virgin Mobile and the rights to call themselves Virgin Media) anyway. If you want a different ISP then you have to get a non-cable phoneline installed.
