RE: Monitor problem.

Yes, it brings up the bios checks.....then dissappears then brings up the windows screen with the loading bar scrolling across then dissappears again, then does another split second where you see the desktop then dissappears again.....its very weird.....perhaps as the above poster says, its time for a new monitor. :( I will try an sort this (try pressing F8) but its at my friends now so I cant check now. He said on the phone he cant work out whats up with it either!

RE: Monitor problem.

Thanks Nick........trouble is, when i start up the pc.......it brings up the "windows" loading screen with the loading bar scrolling but then the screen goes off so I cant access anything on the desktop to put in into safe mode......its a real bummer.

RE: Monitor problem.

Yeah, it is odd Miles........If it was a connection problem, I would see it goin to standby......if it were a pc problem, then it wouldnt boot up but it does! I havent got access to another as everyone has laptops at work but not at home(so they say!)!! Its a weird problem cos the way I see it is that the monitor DOES work......Its only for that 1 second, but its a perfect picture. It does NOT go on standby......It looks as if its still on but its not.........then if i press the on off switch, it goes off......switch it back on, I can see the screen for 1 second and the same again!! Bizzarre.

I think I need to find another pc as you say so I can test this out.

Monitor problem.

Every time I boot up my pc.......the monitor switches on for about 1 second so I can see it booting, then the picture dissappears. Its NOT a connection problem cos the blue light stays on the whole time and yet the picture doesnt come back on. If I switch it on and off at the on-off(!) button.....then it does the same thing everytime.......allows me to see my desktop for about 1 second then the pic dissappears again. Again, the power button is on the whole time.....it never evens flickers. All the connectors are in perfectly......I just cant work out whats up with it....any ideas?

RE: Good Morning Great Britain

Its warm an sunny, good morning to you.

Mobile tariff question for calling outside UK

Hi. my friend is looking for a new deal on her mobile phone but she needs to phone France for about 1 hour a week to speak to her parents and she needs to text New Zealand/Australia every week too.

Basically this is what she needs for the month:

Talktime:
200 mins to France every month (Calls to a landline in France)
100 mins talking to UK.

Texts:

50 Texts a month to Australia/New Zealand.
500 Texts to the UK.

Now I know this is a lot but she is currently spending £30 a month doing this on PAYG and Im sure she must be able to better this, surely ?

Is Skype the best option? Monthly deal? PAYG?

All replies appreciated, thankyou

Richie

Paypal...avoid if possible ....too dangerous ..

See MSE for all the horror stories. I used to think that having a £500 guarantee was like a failsafe. Never realised that virtually NOBODY ever fits the criteria for the guarantee and thousands have lost out to scams. Its terrible and i must say im extra careful now if anything involves papypal .(only paypal through ebay, outside of ebay its a good way to pay.)

RE: Transfering to a CD ?

Thanks guys, did the drag and drop, worked perfectly, thankyou both very much. :)

Transfering to a CD ?

I have my cv in my documents and I also have a back up copy which i emailed to my own hotmail just in case my pc goes up the junction!

What i want to do is put a copy onto compact disc. My pc has a CD and DVD burner but i have no idea how to use this as i never have and dont really understand how to copy things, download things etc.

Can someone tell me how to do this, is it possible, and do i need blank CDR`s or blank DVD`s?

Thankyou

Richie.

RE: Poundland URC22B universal remote control/Clarity freeview box question!

Thanks Mike, yes i did. I then tried the remote on another freeview box and it didnt work on there either, yet i managed to get a tv and dvd player i bought at the weekend working fine.

In the end i just fitted a new coax cable in the other room (with a booster amp in the loft) and bought another freeview box and did it that way. There may be cheap remotes out there but at £15 i thought may as well just buy another, so i did and all is fine now.

Id still be interested to know tho if anyone can get any freeview box working via a URC 22B or any other multi remote.

Poundland URC22B universal remote control/Clarity freeview box question!

Hi, i have one of the Poundland universal remote controls, now i know im the last of the big spenders but i have always found these to work perfectly well with everything, even my hifi.
Thing is, i have just added another freeview box (Clarity from argos at £14.99, once again, last of the big spenders!!) for the back room and after a few teething problems, all is well.

I want to be able to use the universal remote so i can remotely view in another room (adding a tv via a video sender which i have done many times before) but whatever i do, quick search etc, i cant find a code, it searches but will not "power off". Seems like this might be the first piece of hardware that i cant use with it.

Also i cant seem to be able to buy one of these `clarity` remotes anywhere either (yes, even ebay) so im stuck !

Can anyone help?

RE: Freeview reception/aerial problem.

Update: I found out through another site that the Oxford transmitter requires a "Wideband" aerial so i bought one of these and now im all sorted, simple as that. Thanks for the replies tho guys.

Richie.

Freeview reception/aerial problem.

I have tried two freeview boxes and now realise that its not my freeview box but a reception problem! I had the aerial in the loft but then thought it may be better if i moved it back onto the roof.

So, i went up on the roof and jiggled the aerial about (cheap 10 year old analogue type aerial) to differing positions and that seemed to help as, in one position, i then got ALL the channels and most of them with a reasonable picture quality, apart from BBC1, BBC2 and The hits which just kept freezing and giving that `blocky` effect.

The thing is, even though i can get most of the channels, they are all at a very low signal strength and very low signal quality, in fact BBC1 and BBC2 are virtually non existant and regularly lose signal altogether, esp when its raining/cloudy. I know this is most likely because i have one of the old fashioned tv aerials that, at the time, were not made with freeview in mind.

I have been on the Wolfbane website and that tells me that i need an "extra high gain" aerial. I have looked at these and they are a little pricey, yet "high gain" aerials, i can get for as low as £20 including all fixing brackets etc..

My question is, can i get away with just a "high gain" aerial as opposed to an "extra high gain" aerial and is there really all that much difference that i have to spend the extra?

Thanks, if you can even understand any of the above, let alone answer any of it !

RE: I cant afford Virgin anymore but im confused , what can i do?

Ive been with ntl (well, it changed to virgin) for about 5 years now and it just seems tooo expensive. What was the deal with sky+? Id happily try them as i havent been with them ever and im sure they must be able to me a similar package for under £40 surely ?

RE: I cant afford Virgin anymore but im confused , what can i do?

One more question guys, are there any other cable internet providers available?

RE: I cant afford Virgin anymore but im confused , what can i do?

Thanks kebabhead. Looks like that will be a another good option.

RE: I cant afford Virgin anymore but im confused , what can i do?

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like i may have to stay with virgin Chris cos i have looked and looked and having cable means i dont have much chance of bein able to get a cheap broadband so the 3 for £30 maybe my only option :(

I cant afford Virgin anymore but im confused , what can i do?

I have virgin cable and it runs my phone, my broadband and my tv and im paying £40 a month which, since illness, i now cant afford..

This is me :

1.... I like tv.......i watch lots but i only watch what is more or less available on freeview so i dont need all those other channels.

2.....I like the internet. I play around for 2 to 3 hours a day, surfing, checking emails but not much downloading of anything, as i watch films from the video shop or buy music/dvds.

3.....I have a home phone (landline) but never use it......i always make and receive calls via my mobile but im not sure if i need to have a landline for the internet as im no expert and dont really understand it.

What im asking you guys is what are my options?

I want the freeview channels, i want broadband but dont need a phone........how much can i get these services for and what can i get? Im sure at £40 a month, theres a way i can get what i want much cheaper.

Please help unconfuse me !!!

Richie.

RE: Where`s The Strangest Place You Have Ever Slept?

RE: Off to Costa Blanca this Saturday, anyone know a good tapas bar?

Nice one Paull. Im stayin in Javea and have been to scallops, had brekkie there most days an yr right, its spot on. I am goin down to Calpe and as far as Benidorm so will defo see the singing chef as that will be on the way so thanks for that, will let ya know how we get on there. Any Tapas there too?

RE: Going Shopping in NYC next week - any recommendations for ridonkeylous bargains??

Century 21 opposite the World Trade Center is very good. Yes, it is like the TKmaxx style of shopping but amongst the rubbish, there are lots of bargains......Levi/DKNY jeans were $30 (£15) and had every size in odds (31, 32, 33, 34 etc) and i got Valentino shirts for $45 (£22) and we really did clean up.

Take off tags tho i was told so you dont get charged more tax on return. We took old clothes in our case, bought loads of new and had the same weight on way back. Hopefully some `bum` has made the most of the clothes we dumped !!

Macys was ok and it is 11% .....we got a few bargains but found a lot of stuff wasnt that much cheaper, well worth a visit all the same.

Have a good trip, you will enjoy esp as dollar so good, you can eat out all the time at decent restaurants for no more than supermarket cafe prices!

Off to Costa Blanca this Saturday, anyone know a good tapas bar?

I have a car so im happy to drive to Denia, Calpe, Alicante, anywhere, even Benidorm ! Im looking for any good Spanish restaurants and especially good Tapas bars, any recommendations, or directions to good areas to eat, would be greatly appreciated :)
