Are there any VCR`s which automatically disable macrovision?

I understand that if you have the service details of your vcr you can change the required cap to a higher value. Is this easy to do? How do you do it? I also know that some older ferguson models don`t always see the macro signal. My DVD player is a Phillips 711 if I get it chipped will this disable macrovision?

we`ve got an old (15 yrs) Hitachi vcr and it doesn`t recognise the macrovision signal.

I heard SVhs machines are immune - My Sharp VC2000 certainly is!

my 5 year old ferguson disables the macrovision on my philips 711, but apparently one of the old firmware versions for the 711 has no macrovision, and i haven`t checked to see if my player has this, so it might not be the vcr.

Now that would be cool....

Just recording in SVHS or recording in normal as well.

I`ll have a go tonight with my JVC SVHS video.

I tested it in SVHS only and the results were excellent. Never tried standard VHS. But then why would you use standard VHS on an SVHS deck for DVD ?! The modern SVHS decks allow `S` recording on standard tapes.

"The modern SVHS decks allow `S` recording on standard tapes."

So you have a SVHS ET model? I was thinking of getting one. I would have preferred the JVC but I what to use it with another JVC I have so I would get conflicts with the remotes

Can you answer some queries

1. Can it record in ET mode in LP?
2. Will ET recorded tapes play on a normal VCR?
3. In ET mode, can you use normal quality VHS tapes?
4. Does it make a difference what tapes you use?
5. Do you think your ET VCR was worth the extra money?
6. Who`s the best company to buy yours from? At what price?

If you have any comments good or bad about your VCR I would be interested to hear

Thanks, Briley

As I said I would have liked the JVC but I`m looking at the Sharp

I don`t need it for the macro free recording ( I have a Mico 980 with Macro disabled ) but it would be good for better DVD recordings and Hi8 camcorder archiving. Also should be better picture on a Widescreen TV ( when I eventually get one!)

Where are you Mark

>1. Can it record in ET mode in LP?

No - none of the SVHS ET machines can do this (I think!)

>2. Will ET recorded tapes play on a normal VCR?

Only if the VHS machine has a `Quasi SVHS` playback feature. I also have a 8 year old Mitsubishi VHS machine that has this and it works fine. Very rare feature tho.

>3. In ET mode, can you use normal quality VHS tapes?

Yes

>4. Does it make a difference what tapes you use?

Yes - I use the HiFi ones usually but standard VHS tapes these days are generally very good.

>5. Do you think your ET VCR was worth the extra money?

Without a doubt.

>6. Who`s the best company to buy yours from? At what price?

At the time - best price was Comet on their website. Even so, 250 notes for an SVHS deck is peanuts (I remember them 1000+)!
