Job application forms

bigfan (Elite) posted this on Monday, 25th October 2004, 11:12

Why do these application forms for jobs always have the box with

"Please indicate below in no more than 250 words why you think you are suitable for a career at XXXXXX

Please give examples to strengthen any information given. Anything within this box is likely to be discussed further at interview stage."

What are the best things to be writing in these boxes? I know I`d be suitable for quite a few of the jobs I`m looking at, but how do I convey that in a box?

Personal experience, unique skills, problem solving abilities etc etc.

Really, anything you want to say about yourself that the rest of the app didn`t let you, but think of it as a kind of advert....if there`s something in there that sparks interest, or grabs attention, it`s more than likely the prospective employer would give you an interview just to find out more about it!

Which means step 1) getting the interview is completed ;)

Look at the job description, that section is where you effectively prove that you can do the job well. Describe how you fit the profile and give examples to prove it.

I`d draft it first to make sure you get it in a state where you`re happy before writing it up on the application form. Also, don`t be afraid to use continuation sheets as this shows you are not constricted to the format that you have been given on the form.

Cheers, I`m going to give a draft a go today. Once I have one written up I can adjust it for all the application forms really, it`s just getting that first one done!

A good tip when is to also write down a few of your weaknesses but don`t paint them in a bad light, turn it into a positive.

I`d agree with what`s been said already. Usually, one or two good examples of when you`ve shown an ability in one of the `requirements` for the job, ie leadership, planning, meeting a deadline etc. What I would add is that you be honest; if they use one of your examples in the interview and question you a little more in depth ), you`d look silly if you couldn`t remember the example. To aid this always remember to photocopy your application form and go through it just before the interview.

I, personally, wouldn`t use continuation sheets. The space provided is sometimes a test in itself. To use an continuation sheet is akin to extending a deadline - obviously, you can`t extend a deadline! In addition, on the interview panels I have attended, there have been hundreds of application forms to read - the longer ones tend to be `scanned` and not taken in as well as short, to the point ones and can lose out because of it.
