Are UMD movies for the PSP region locked ?

ellis_fella (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 14th April 2005, 15:47

I`m toying with idea of getting an imported PSP from Canada but someone told me that I wouldn`t be able to play British UMD movies on it when they come out cos they`ll be region locked much like DVD`s. Just wandered if any of you knew whether this was true or not. If it is, can you unlock the PSP ??? what about the games, will they be locked ??

Cheers

The games are region free. However UMD disks are region locked and knowing Sony there will be no easy way of getting round this. However if you get a big enough memory card you can rip your current dvd`s and watch them from the memory stick - which is what i`m doing. The umd disks are good but ask yourself if you are really going to buy a film twice - once on dvd then umd so you can watch it on the move. Must admit the quality of the Spiderman 2 UMD is excellent.

What kind of size would I need the memory stick to be if I was going to rip DVD`s for it ?? You don`t need a DVD writer to rip a DVD to you, all I have on my PC is a DVD drive and CD re-writer.

All you need is a 512meg or 1 gig memory card for a psp (www.picstop.co.uk) some free software (pspvideo9) and a bigish hard drive to store you psp movies. Its easy to do but can take time. For further details see www.pspvideo9.com

How many movies can a 1GB hold, say that the average movie lasts between 1hr 30mins to 2hrs 20mins?

How long before the PSP is cracked and you put games to a memory stick?...When the 2GB ones are out.

It all depends on the the quality settings you choice, you can make a 1Gb memory stick hold anywhere from a 2 hour film (max quality) to 6 hours (low settings), best thing to do is to mess around with the settings and find what looks good for you and stick with it.

www.flash-memory.co.uk is also a good source for cards.

Also, if you need JAP region UMD movies, play-asia sell them and they often have English as a language option.

And, remember that when the UK eventually get the PSP, the UK UMD disks `should` have the same region encoding.
