I guess the infrastructure issue is something that only BT can do

Not true. Many operators have their own national networks. We are currently delivering a large capacity DWDM photonics national network to t-mobile for instance.

RE: PC World offers `free` laptop with Orange broadband

It`ll probably cost you £300 in calls to the help line to get the darn thing working.

RE: PC World offers `free` laptop with Orange broadband

or a choice fo other laptops with a contribution.

also, the first three months are half price. If you`re on a line that can;t get more than 2 meg then this looks like a good deal to me. Also tempted to get the parents on the net with a comp for next to nuthin.

RE: Acoustic Solution 19in Widescreen HD Ready LCD TV £149.99 at Argos

The 360 outputs at 1080p. It used to be limited to 1080i but since a dashboard update months ago it is now 1080p (but it doesn`t necessarily need to be 1080p to be HD).

All the "HD ready" stuff is all aimed at DISPLAYS. i.e. a display has to have a HDMI or DVI INPUT to be able to use the "HD ready" logo. This DOES NOT mean that HD can ONLY be delivered via that medium, simply that they have to have that connectivity to be able to use the term.

Just because a HD SOURCE does nit have a HDMI output does not mean it is not HD. THe 360 outputs via component. Theere is also a new 360 elite which has a HDMI port, but the machine is exactly the same.

RE: Digifusion FVRT200 Twin Tuner Freeview box+ 80GB HD Recorder - £70

They suck. I had one for about three months before the PSU gave up (common problem).

I now have a Topfield, can`t reccommend it highly enough.

I also has one of the aldi ones when it was fiorst released 12 months ago.....it went back two days after I bought it.

My mate stuck with it hoping the s/w updates would cure it. They have made it better but its still not perfect.

RE: FIFA RTWC XBOX 360 £12.99 Delivered ! @softuk.com

When I go to the payment page there is a padlock. ALso the properties show:

SSL 3.0, RC4 with 128 bit encryption (High); RSA with 1024 bit exchange

Now, I`m not all that up on security and was gonna place an order for this, but do you still think this is dodgy?

Ogster - checked at home, and speed stabilises to 432kbps. I guess this is good?

yeah, i`d say your between 3 & 4 meg, so considering it`s only supposed to be 1 meg, i reckon it`s all good

I`d say you`re bang on.

Out of interest I tried the AOE demo and got around 430k. I am on a BT line which varies between 3 and 5 meg

RE: REPLIES BY 4PM PLEASE - DigiFusion FreeView with 80BG Hard Drive £76

I am an ex FVRT-145 owner.

all I can say is....beware ALL budget PVR`s. I`ve had 3 of them ranging from £99 to £145. They ALL had faults. The FVRT blew its PSU.

The basic idea of these machines is brilliant. I ended up spending £250 on a topfield and never looked back.

RE: Sky Broadband upto 16MB Unlimited download Ten Pound Mth (Sky Cust Only)

Well, I have no experience of either Sky or Tiscali internet.

However, I do have experience of supplying and installing and maintaining Easynet`s high bandwidth DWDM optical network backbone (so what you say).

Well, Tiscali are Easynet`s main customer - they use the network we built for Easynet. Sky have now bought Easynet - guess which Optical backbone Sky are using (why did they buy Easynet?).

My guess is that you will not see much difference in the quality of your connection - they use the same s***e (cough) backbone we sold them !

:P

RE: Fusion FVRT200 Freeview Set Top Box 80GB HDD Twin tuner £94.50 incl VAT

Tried to warn you mate, don`t get another!

The PSU are known to blow on these machines cos they are under rated. Many people buy other supplies in an attempt to make them last but they don`t. I guess you got one of these.

I don`t know about ebuyers terms, but, as they have clearly sent you a unit that is used they should pay the return postage themselves. It is actually illegal to sell a used item as if it is new, they can`t charge you for returning that !

RE: Fusion FVRT200 Freeview Set Top Box 80GB HDD Twin tuner £94.50 incl VAT

Sod the replacenebt, get a refund !

With PVR`s you really need to have a reliable supplier because I will almost garauntee that you will be taking it back within 12 months.

RE: Fusion FVRT200 Freeview Set Top Box 80GB HDD Twin tuner £94.50 incl VAT

Get a different PVR !!!!!

IF this sort of thing didn`t happen to you day one then it usually happens within the first 12 months.

PVR`s are notoriously unreliable and buggy. Read my earlier post. I ended up paying 150 quid for a top noth machine and haven`t regretted it........3 other machines (including a fusion) were crap.

RE: Fusion FVRT200 Freeview Set Top Box 80GB HDD Twin tuner £94.50 incl VAT

I`ve had a digifusion 145, took it back after two months the power supply karked it. It`s a known problem that they really should fix. Other main problems with their range :

1) Awfull EPG that takes a long long time to get used to (if you ever will)

2) Quite noisy - the fan and hard drive never power down unless you switch it off at the wall and thus don`t get the 02.00 hrs EPF update.

I started with the Aldi machine, went through 2 other manufacturers and have ended up with a Topfield. These are rather expensive in comparison but they are well worth the money.

RE: DVD Recorder with Twin tuner and 80GB HD Aldi

I had one of the technosonic ones in November/Decemder or whatever it was and took it back 2 days later.

I do know 2 people who kept them waiting for the fixes.......One is now ecstatically happy with his, the other when just died after the second update.

If it had worked it was a brilliant machine. It impressed me so much that I have spent the time since then looking for a suitable replacement. I have so far tried 4 other machines, going ever upwards on the price scale (and they were without exception VASTLY inferior to the technosonic in terms of spec and usability).

I now have a topfield that cost £250. Has a larger disc but basically does the same thing. It is a light year ahead in customisabilty so I`m quite happy at spending the extra money
and at last getting a reliable (almost bug free) PVR.

If this one is similar to the technosonic in terms of features and price and is relatively bug free, then its a bargain I reckon.

RE: ***NEW*** XBOX 360 Games for as little as £17.99

nice one.

the p&p code went in but didn`t come off the final order.

RE: Philips DVD Recorder - £129.99 @ Sainsburys

I also bought one of the Phillips 610 from sainsbury`s.

after less than a year it was cast to the loft after several software updates that made the unit worse and worse.

I even e-mailed phillips saying it was crap and did their brand damage.

Without a doubt THE worst piece of consumer electrinics I have ever bought and I doubt I will ever buy one of their products again.

RE: TESCO 20% off charts dvd & games - this week only

RE: xbox live (inc. 360) 12 months gold membership £19.61

Just ordered this to extend my membership that runs out in 6 months time.

Good spot OP.
