Acoustic Solution 19in Widescreen HD Ready LCD TV £149.99 at Argos

As it sez.

May not be the best contrast ratio or spec on the market, but at that price, I have just booked one for in-store collection later today for our bedroom.

Should be better than the 13 year old 17" CRT TV it`ll be replacing!

Well, I`ve been and collected it, Gaffski, and I`m very pleased with it. 8)

Light as a feather (6.1kg, it says on the box - doesn`t actually feel that heavy though!)

Switches between 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios at the click of a button (no automatic widescreen switching - is this normal on smaller sets?). Selectable audio and video settings including personalised options. The sound is strong and clear - you get 2 x 3 W RMS sitting under the screen, and the Nicam stereo is surprisingly good considering how close the speakers are to each other.

The HD input is DVI, so no good if you want to plug in an HDMI lead (you`d need an adaptor at extra cost), but it also has 1 RGB SCART, VGA (PC input), S-Video, Component and Composite inputs, so not a bad lot for a budget screen. It also has stereo audio outputs and a headphone socket (at the rear of the TV)

Component input is good - my DVD player outputs 576P which looks pretty darn good (my first ever progressive picture experience!) I don`t have any HD equipment, so I can`t test that side out unfortunately. I have Sky running through it on RGB SCART and that is also very clear.

Small cluttered remote. You wouldn`t want this in the living room, as you`d get frustrated with the tiny buttons, but for a second TV it is acceptable. Auto set up and tuner - took about 30 seconds to rig itself up. No problem. Sleep timer in 5 min increments up to 2 hours.

It is physically 21" wide x 16" high (17.5" if you include the stand) x 5" deep and the stand is 12" x 8" in size.

Anything else you`d like to know? The offer is only on for the Bank Holiday weekend, and I took advantage of the half price wall mount for £9.99 to go with it.

That Mico one looks good too, if you need the DVD player. I have always been worried about buying a combi in case one of the components fails. Then you need to replace the whole lot. :/

Cheers Sue. I think you`ve swayed me. Just need to convince the missus that the 14" portable telly is no longer acceptable in our room. Shouldn`t be a problem!

This looks like the same one I got hold of two of a couple of months ago.

Decent enough set and to me, very surprising for an LCD, and that`s running on an aerial input.
Probably going to see this stuff drop in price rapidly due to analogue tuners without Freeview tuners and the digital switchover fast approaching.

Yes, and it`s great news! I don`t actually use the aerial on my roof any more. I tested the set`s tuner to check it was OK, mainly for Gaffski`s benefit, but I only watch Sky Digital on all my sets, so a Freeview tuner (or lack of) is irrelevant to me.

Just been to Tesco and saw the same set rebranded as a Venturer. Everything was exactly the same except it didn`t have the DVI input, so no HD Ready logo. Price ? £179.99

No HD input but £30 dearer! :o

Pity that it seems to have only an analogue tuner - so would need external Freeview box
when local analogue transmissions cease.
