Dongles - Mobile Broadband

calexw (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 6th July 2008, 17:14

Hallo,

Does anyone use these, or have ideas of the best deals. I want to get one for my dad, as it`s easier than getting `normal` boradband in, plus he will only use it occasionaly for Skype etc.

I saw 3`s Pay as you go deal, but seems expensive for a little 1Gb limit. Plus £1 a meg if you go over!

Do the other networks in the UK have anything similar?

Yup.. MASSIVE charges. Really, you are paying WAY over the odds for the dongle convenience. I think 3 is the cheapest!

i have a friend who has the o2 version, @£20 per month. he seems to have excellent coverage, but the limit is 3gig a month, then 20p per mag after that, so if 3 is £1 per meg after the cap it`s much more expensive :(

but imo it`s only worthwhile if your rambling around with your laptop all the time, otherwise normal broadband is miles better.

Just a word of warning, a guy I do work for has got the 3 one, borrowed it when my broadband went down and the dongle doesn`t work on vista. May have been fixed by now but that was only a couple of months ago

I was using the black "3" one in cornwall on my vista laptop at the start of May- worked ok fo me.
PAYG, saved me going to an internet cafe, just cost a £10 topup.

sister in law has one as bt wanted nearly 200 pounds to put a telephone line in with board band, does the job, 15 notes a month 3gb download limit 12 month contact a few months back, though do hammer you if you go over the limit. A few things to look at are, there are black spots where the dongle will switch to gprs rather than the faster broadband 3g service , if looking at a vodafone one they have a map showing slow connection areas. Am sure the other ones are the same but the vodafone has a usage monitor which I quite like. Dont get me wrong a dedicated land line would be better, but I remember a couple of years ago I was on a 1gb a month limit, did me fine. Not bad speeda and connection considering its using the mobile network., vast improvement over the early cards.

Few guys at work here use them (no wireless on client site). Two have 3 ones and one has a T-Mobile one, for one person they seem fine as long as you are not uploading/downloading massive files shouldn`t be a problem. Pages load fairly quickly to.
