RE: Caxton Card

Not used it personally, but it got an OK review on lovemoney.com

http://www.lovemoney.com/video/love-it-or-loathe-it--prepaid-currency-cards-28.aspx

and an article here:

http://www.lovemoney.com/news/credit-cards/a-handy-alternative-to-credit-cards-2473.aspx

Although, Turkey doesn`t use the Euro, so you might still be charged when they convert from the local (Lira) back to Euros. Caxton do say they give the best exchange rate though.

Dongles - Mobile Broadband

Hallo,

Does anyone use these, or have ideas of the best deals. I want to get one for my dad, as it`s easier than getting `normal` boradband in, plus he will only use it occasionaly for Skype etc.

I saw 3`s Pay as you go deal, but seems expensive for a little 1Gb limit. Plus £1 a meg if you go over!

Do the other networks in the UK have anything similar?

RE: DVDs with Chinese subtitles

Thanks Guys (and Ladies)

Found what I wanted, some good links. The OH (chinese) might not complain so much about my DVD buying if she can have proper subtitles!

DVDs with Chinese subtitles

Heelo Chaps,

Are there any places where I can buy DVDs that have an asian set of subtitles rather than the European set?

Does it depend on Region? If i find somewhere selling Region 4? will the subtitles be in chinese/thai/korean etc?

Talking about your standard movies, US/UK films and TV.

Any shopping sites etc would be welcome.

Thanks

POLL: How long did you go out with your partner before getting married?

This post includes a poll.I`ve been going out with the `bird` for nigh upon 7 months now, and alread people are asking if we are going to "settle down",
In my mind it is too soon, I`d like to wait at least a year before thinking about making it more permanent.

What say you, the great DVD reviewer public?

RE: Why not use a Psychic to find Madeline ?

A psychic eh? while we`re at it how about getting the Loch Ness monster and the yeti in on the search, both as much use as a psychic IMO...

RE: Picture Set-Up For LCD?

Cheers folks - the sharpness and dynamic processing were ramped up, so have turned them right down. And the contrast was at full whack, so have sorted that as well.

Is it worth getting a DVD test disc for proper calibration? Anywhere you can pick them up cheap? Ebay?

Picture Set-Up For LCD?

Hello chaps,

Just bought my new LCD (Samsung LE32R71), and it`s lovely. However, I always read comments by folk who say "the picture wasn`t great until i set it up properly".
Knowing that the defaults aren`t always great, what should I be doing to get the picture top notch?

Different settings for the STB and DVD inputs, regards to contrast, brightness etc? Color temp?
Or is it a case of playing around for a few hours till i find out whats best?

Any pointers or tips welcome...

RE: Is she my girlfriend?

heh, not yet mate.
I`m going to broach the subject next time I see her, but I suspect we are an `item` now.
There`s a toothbrush of hers in my bathroom now as well...

RE: Is she my girlfriend?

Mmm. It`s just that we`ve only been going out for little over 2 weeks, but we`re quite comfortable with each other, so it feels like we`ve been going out longer, if you know what i mean.
I don`t really want to jinx it, seen as it`s only 2 weeks old.

If we go out for a month, then i think she can be classed as a girlfriend.

If we make it to Xmas - i suppose I have to get her some sort of present as well!

cheers

Is she my girlfriend?

Trying to decide whether or not this girl I am seeing is officially my girlfriend or not. How does one decide, I mean, what is the criteria?
I`m not sure how to describe her to people if I meet them in the shops or something.

Length of time (2 weeks), phonecall frequency(daily), presence of female products in bathroom(nil, but there were clothes in my wardrobe at one point).?
And lets say that we`ve been quite naughty also... ;)

How would you determine the status of a relationship?

cheers

RE: What`s the best torrent search engine?

I use torrentspy.com, has a decent search facility and there are indexed lists of torrents as well.

Others that I know of with good reputations are isohunt.com and thepiratebay.org.

those should keep you right i think.
oh, and tvtorrents.com, which you have to sign up for, and they keep track of your stats - ratios etc, but it is a good place to get TV progs.

RE: WHAT GROUP/SINGER WOULD YOU NOW WANT TO GO SEE NOW.......

I`d see Elvis, any concert, but maybe the 68 special.
Beatles
Guns N Roses (someone said that above, so I agree)

Frank Sinatra, even though he did about 8 farewell tours, still before my time.

RE: What I watched this week (w/e Sunday 12th February)

Hello Chaps

Technically, this includes the week before, but I forgot to post.

DVD

Million Dollar Baby - Very good I thought. Wasn`t expecting it to go down the path it did, but I enjoyed it immensely.

Mystic River - Got this out after seeing MDB, and it was OK. Didn`t have as much impact on me as MDB, but it was still a well told and well performed story.

Lost in Translation - I liked this as well, just a nice chill out film (if there is such a thing), with subtle turns from both the lead turns.

Broken Flowers - Saw this after LIT, and while I liked it, I didn`t enjoy it as much as as LIT, there was nothing to connect to for me. But there is a naked chick in it...

House of Flying Daggers - Magic. Good story, good chopsocky action, Zhang Ziyi. And it looks amazing. I want to buy it and watch it again when I get my widescreen LCD.

Paycheck - Bought this from Amazon, and forgot all about it until it turned up the other day. I like it, Uma Thurman does sci-fi / weird chick quite well (I also like Gattaca a lot). Plus i`m a sci-fi fan, so the plot appealed to me. Isn`t it based on a short story by someone?

Quantum Leap, Series 1 - TV at its best. I remember watching it when I was young, on BBC2 9pm if i recall correctly. It`s been shown on TV here recently, so I decided to buy the box set. Some good episodes here, that build up the characters of Sam and Al nicely. Series 2 will be ordered soon.

Columbo, S1 - Has also been on TV of late, so decided to pick up the first series, as it was quite cheap. Only watched 1 so far, but they`re good yarns, and well, it`s Columbo doing his thing. I see the first episode there was directed by Spielberg.

TV

Rangers v Celtic - 0-1 - pure pish.

Hardware Retailers?

hi Chaps,

Anyone got recommendations on where to buy multiregion DVD players these days?
The two companies I used before (Techtronics and HomeCinemaHeaven) have both gone down the pan - do they have any decent successors?

RE: Recent School Uniform-

No, it`s not an accepted religion at all, regardless of how many nerds wrote it on the census form. (It would have been classed as `Other`, along with people who wrote `Manchester Utd`, for example).

Snopes is your friend.

RE: Personal DVD Viewing LOG w/e Sunday 6th March

Ronin (2Disc Edition) - Just bought this new edition from Amazon, for about £7 - bargain or what. Excellent film by the way. Just starting on the director`s commentary track.

i think that was it! Spent most of the time playing with my new laptop and wireless network. Got a backlog of things to watch, so maybe next weeks entry wil be more intersting.

RE: Alternative internet browsers?

The main one nowadays is Mozilla Firefox. (www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/)

From a general view, it`s a small compact prog - a 5Mb download - doesn`t hog your whole system, not intertwined with windows the way IE is. Also less likely is the amount of security incidents.

Browse wise, it has tabbed-browsing and a popup blocker. It also has support for `extensions` -3rd party plugins that can do a variey of useful things. E.g. - I have FoxyCast installed - which gives me a current weather forecast icon in the toolbar. Also I have FoxyTunes - which I can use to control my iTunes from within the browser.
Also you can set up quick searches - e.g. I can just open a new tab and type `tv seinfeld` - which will take me straight to the search results for `Seinfeld` at TvTome.com.

Overall, quick and small, and very customisable. Give it a shot. Oh aye - it`s Free!

Another one I used to use was Opera, which has the same features as Firefox, just about, but i think you have to buy it.

RE: Personal DVD Viewing LOG w/e Sunday 27th Feb.

The Grudge (New version) - This was recommended to me, it was OK, a few jumpy bits, but overall i was left a bit unsatisfied. Reading on the web, it seems there`s a whole folklore of Ju-On/Grudge, lots of backstory and stuff, and I don`t think that was really shown in this version.

Saw - I enjoyed this more than `The Grudge` to be honest, something a bit different, original. Apparantly they`re making a sequel.

Seinfeld (extras) - ploughed through all the featurettes - interesting if you`re a fan. Which I am.

Curb Your Enthusiasm S1 - Only watched 2 episodes so far, but I like it. You`d have to watch it really to know what it`s like. If you know what I mean.

regards

This Ken Livingstone thing

Have I missed a post on this? I searched back but couldn`t find one. Surprised no one`s mentioned it.

Anyway, is anyone else fed up hearing about this? What does everyone think?

IMO, he shouldn`t apologise, why should he, it wasn`t racist. The fact that the reporter happened to be Jewish should have nothing to do with it - but because KL mentioned Nazi`s, he`s a huge anti-semite.

Now, Tony Blairs wading in saying he should apologise. What`s the point - Ken Livingstone has said he`s not sorry, and if he stood up and apologised he`d be lying. So why is everyone banging on about him saying sorry, when it would be a pointless, empty gesture?

end of rant.

RE: Personal DVD Viewing LOG w/e Sunday 30th Jan.

The West Wing Season 3 (R1) - Way behind with the West Wing, as I left the country and missed it on terrestrial TV, then waited for the R1 discs, for the extra features. A good season this, great writing as ever, and leaves me waiting impatiently for Season 4 and the election run up!

Seinfeld Season 1 (R1) - My favourite US comedy series. Interesting to see these early episodes. Good discs, with lots of extras, which I haven`t got round to watching yet.

and that was the week that was.

RE: Motorbike License - what`s involved?

Ok, cheers.

I found a website of a place near to me, that was quite helpful as well.

I think i`ll go for a CBT course, I`ve decided. Will have to look sort out some proper gear for myself though - gloves etc.
Not sure i want to shell out on new stuff, reckon theres bargains to be had on eBay?

Motorbike License - what`s involved?

Hi Chaps

I`ve seen some motorbike-type posts here before, so I know some of you are clued up on this stuff.

I want to learn to ride/get a bike license, so can someone tell me generally what`s involved - costs, time, etc?
What`s this CBT(?) thing you have to get first.

This has been prompted by a friend of mine who recently got a Honda CBR600RR, which is frankly lovely. I can see me doing myself damage though, so may start off with a putt-putt scooter!

RE: Who annoys you most on TV?

Janet Jackson, she`s all over the shop because of that Superbowl nonsense, I wish her and JT would go away and never come back. Really, who cares?

Apart from that, the usual suspects. Tellytubbies. The Chuckle Brothers.

Bloody Lorraine Kelly!!!

She`s so phoney! And I can hardely understand a word she says...surprising since she was in my high school class for 5 years!

Lorraines not so bad. As for the accent, thats what Claremont school will do to you, everyone knows you want to go to Hunter! ;)
(sorry, people, theres maybe 2 folk who know what im talking about!)

West Wing - Series 2, Disc 2 Probs?

Alrighty,
Anyone had problems with this disc, specifically the episode "Galileo"?
Just at the start of the episode, it started to break up, and eventually froze. You could skip past it and it would play Ok.

Am I just unlucky or has anyone else had the same thing?

It could just be my player I suppose, I`m going to try it on another one tonight, and i`ll put it in a PC and see what happens.

Cheers

Alright Chaps,

Was thinking of getting one of those Sonic Toothbrush jobs, to replace my current Oral B one.

Anyone got one, can you recommend?
