whats my pc doing?!

dave2812 (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 19th May 2007, 07:38

Hi

When I turn my PC Desktop on from `cold` it takes ages to stop the hard drive whirring away about 10 minutes, also when I open a browser page and the delete it by clicking the cross at the top of the page it sort of scrolls down slowly before my desktop icons are back..........its like the hard drive is working away but there is nothing happening......very odd??? Also when I go to a website it takes for ever before the site is diplayed, but the connection is 2 meg and I know the connection speed is fine...

Ideas?? Dave

Possible there`s something heavy running in the background. I`ll assume you`re on XP.

ctrl+alt+delete, then click on the processes tab. The mem usage column should tell you what`s sucking your memory.

Half a day running spyware/adware/antivirus programs wouldn`t hurt either.

nb. apparently, instead of clicking the cross to close a web page, clicking the top left of the page by the page name then clicking close there is better for closing pages. Apparently. Something to do with deleteing the page rather than just closing it. i dunno. I`m tired

Does seem a slightly high number of processes but not overly so.

The first thing I`d do is defrag your hard disk, it might just be that your HD has become so fragmented that it`s really struggling.

The other thing you could do is to go into msconfig and reduce the number of programs that are running in the background. You could also use a registry cleaner like CCleaner to cut some of the crud from the registry..

All things to try but do the Defrag first and see if that helps, if not then use CCleaner to try and sort the registry and then lastly try msconfig but it`s not trivial to use.

CCleaner is a free application from here: www.ccleaner.com

Use the issues part of the program to sort out the registry, it saves a backup files of the changes made incase it does something wrong - which hasn`t been needed for me.

Hi, it sound like you might have a virus(spyware) as well, it might be working in the background and making your computer slower it happened to me many time I ran Adware from lavasoft and spybot to remove them... Anti virus does not help much in these issues.
I recommend also checking in this Tech Support Site where I found the solution in the first place. Just search for your problem or you product and you can also ask in the live chat support, you can use it for free.

Good luck

HI,

Is your anti virus up to date? What do you use to remove spyware? Do you clear your internet history/cach/temp files? All reasons your PC may be running slowly and why some programs may not be responding.

The reccomended programs (CCleaner, Ad Aware) are great products I`ve used for years and recommended to a lot of friends. AVG is great too.

Anti viruses and spyware removers are different types of things that you need seperate programs to take care of.

I use NOD32 anti virus and run both Ad Aware and AVG regularly to check for spyware. Use CCleaner regularly too, to get rid of the crap and neither my desktop or my laptop have ever had the problem of running slowly.
