Windows Explorer crashes when I select an AVI file

Running WinXP
Whenever I try to open - or even highlight- an avi file in Windows Explorer the software crashes. Anyone had a similar problem?

Something similar. Windows Media Player kept crashing.
A reinstall fixed it.

Have you got the view set to thumbnail? I`ve heard of it happening when Windows tries to load the thumbnail of the avi - change to icons or just a list and see if that helps.

I had this a few times. They were as corrupt as buggery. The only option was to group select it with a file either side and delete them all.

when I`ve had similar problems, getting newer codecs has fixed it.

Yup, I had the same problem, only it was a complete system freeze so I always had to reset... fixed it with a re-install of the XviD codec.

check in folder types in control panel and see what application avi files are set to open with.

Thanks for the advice
I have tried the following
Reinstall codec - no same problem.
re4install Realplayer - no same problem
Reinstall Windows Media Player- no same problem
Uninstall ConvertXtoDVD - no same problem
Try the thread here http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/3588p1.html - no same problem
The only thing that works is to connect AVI files to DIVX player.

I win the internet! After porn files have been through a few PCs they can easily become corrupt and cause unexpected behaviour in your windows environment.
