LG 8110 on 3 - anyone have one and what`s the verdict?

mikeyb (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 22nd July 2004, 08:27

Been eyeing up the new LG 8110 on a 3 contract ( 1/2 price line rental for 12 months ) and was wondering if anyone has one and what they thought of it.

Having checked the availabilty of services map I can see that we only get voice in our area at the moment so I assume this will prevent me getting the video content ie: sport and entertainment.

Any info/help greatly appreciated as I really need to update my old Nokia and the 500 mins a month for £12.50 is perfect for me, I would like to add the £10 full content add-on as well, but the coverage may scupper that?

:)

A very nice phone indeed - been using mine for about two weeks now.

In terms of coverage, not having access to video calls should not affect your access to the "online" content, I think. In truth, video calling is a gimmick and you need your friends to use the same service to benefit from it. However, worth noting that the news headlines (which I check daily) are free (ie the ones without video clips).

It does the important things well - phone calls are clear, the menu interface is very intuitive, and you can even upload mp3s and use them as ringtones (I`ve got Choice by Orbital which kicks off with a very loud "Wake Up !"). You can add photos of your mates to their contact details too - I`m not aware of any other phones that let you do that.

It`s light (126g), compact, looks good (you can buy a stubbier aerial for about £2 on eBay) and has a funky backlight on the front screen to show time and date. The inside screen is very sharp indeed.

All told, it`s a winner. With the 12 month half price connection, generally you have to claim the cashback after 6 months or so - you pay £12.50 for the first 3 months then £25 a month thereafter. I went with Chatterbox (via a tie-up with Google) - just avoid Phones4u or Dialaphone and you`ll be fine :)

I`ve heard the LG 8110 is decent phone but the negatives are that it does not have bluetooth and it`s on the 3 Network!

If you have to get on the 3 Network then I`d wait until the new Sony handset comes out, which I`ve been advised will be in August. My 12 months are up and I have refused to upgrade to the LG handset as I find their customer service and coverage terrible.

mikeyb,
We have two Motorola A835`s on 3 (about 4 months now) and have not had a problem with our service from 3, so we do not know what customer service is like :)
As Clayts has advised, the new LG looks good and seems a great deal, only 8 months to go and we may get one (or the new Sony, etc) but more competition for 3 is arriving 8) So look out for more bargains!

Thanks for the info guys - I think I`ll hang on until the Sony one appears just to see what it`s like before making my mind up.

The Z1010 looks a neat phone, I have to say, and is better than the LG in that it offers Bluetooth and upgradeable memory. LG are supposed to be bringing out the U8150 which also has these features, but this seems to have been delayed until September :(

I`m interested in the 8110 despite having no Bluetooth and only 14mb of memory. The one thing I wanna double check is when you make video calls do you get billed extra? Or are they included in say your free minutes depending on which tariff you pick?

They are not included, only voice calls are - 50p per minute for video calls. A novelty, quite frankly, and not one I plan on using any time soon.
