Hello gang.

I just got me an LG 37" 1080p LCD tv (37LF65)

I have a sony dvd player connected via RGB scart

Not watched many films yet, but they look fine so far........

ANYWAY,

I believe an upscaling dvd player is the way to go.

how much ? which one ? any pitfalls ??

etc ?

Try and fins an indepth review of your TV as it may already have a decent autoscaler built into it which could mean a standalone would be a waste of money.

Haven`t tried any standalone systems but i can highly recommend the Xbox360 for Upscaling. Have alook around, i`m sure there is a pretty decent Philips machine kicking around with HDMI out and Divx playback for under £40.

Oppo DV-981HD. Excellent up-conversion and superior deinterlacing, plus it does DivX, DVD-Audio and SACD. You`d have tp spend a lot more to get something noticeably better.

Well with 1080p, put your hands in your pockets again at get a tosh ep30 for 200 notes and make the most out of 1080p two free hd dvds and hdmi cable in the box, and pick another 5 on redemption, will upscale your old dvds as well.

But it`s not multi-region, so if he has any number of region 1/3/4 etc DVDs he`ll be scuppered. That`s why I recommended the Oppo, which also scales to 1080p and is region free out of the box (usually).

Ive been recommended the Samsung DVD-HD870, anybody know if its any good. Amazon has it as both upscaling and multiregion which ticks all the right boxes for me.

I`d do some reading on it first. Just because products upscale it doesn`t mean they`re any good at it. A lot of budget decks also fail 2/2 cadence for PAL material (the Pioneer I used to own for example), which will result in jaggies if you`re watching UK/Australian discs etc. They also fail blacker than black and a number of other things. Guess it depends on how much you`re willing to spend really.

The oppo is definitely a good bet, but the Sammy is a damn damn good upscaling DVD Player. Highly recommended - used to own one till recently (upgraded to BD).

That may do the job as a "MR" upscaling job for Canada.

Cheers for the heads up.
