Can you unlock an i-phone bought in America?

Friend might be able to get me one in America soon - will it work over here? Any ideas - greatly appreciated.

Yes you can use it in the UK - it is a GSM device. However, no 3G support so no 3G calling etc. Edge support in the UK is sketchy IMO. However, the device is deffo a good one.

You can unlock it also - easily, even though the current firmware update has bricked iphones, but you can jailbreak that easily. You need a mac to do it though - google for it, there are tonnes of websites. Forgotten where i saw.

Beware though, apparently a recent software update has locked all iPhones that have been unlocked. Saw this on the BBC page somewhere...

Here is a blow-by-blow of how to repair a bricked iphone. It CAN be done, contrary to popular ignorance :)

But of course - you have to be ready to repair and suffer a couple of days outage whenever you upgrade firmware. Alternatively you could switch off the updates and enjoy the phone as it is. After all, initially - how often did you update the firmware on your fecking phone?
