another surround sound question...

Garf (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 25th October 2001, 10:12

Hi, I`ve got an LG3200 and was looking at getting a fairly cheap surround sound kit to go with it.

From what I can tell from the LG site (and all this tech talk goes right over my head) it has Dolby Digital/MPEG-2/DTS Digital Output but doesn`t mention a "decoder"? Unless it`s one and the same thing..

Anyway, I was looking at maybe getting one of the JBL kits from Currys as mentioned in the bargain forum (assuming there`s any left) - would this work with the LG or would I need to buy anything else to go with it?Alternatively I was also looking at the Bush Pro 300, bit cheaper but I`m not after earth-shattering quality!

If anyone can give a complete novice some help, it`d be well appreciated :)

Cheers,

Garf

Does your LG has 6 outputs on the back for front L & R, Centre, Rear L & R plus Subwoofer? If so then it has an on board decoder. In this case you can use any of the other things like the Bush, Novatech etc.

The blurb you mention may just mean that it is capable of outputting the DD/DTS signal (undecoded).

The JBL has an on board decoder, so you will be fine with that if this is the case.

Thanks Richard, I`ll have a look at the connections on the back tonight and buy accordingly :)

Cheers again for your help,

If I were you, I`d see if you can get the JBL system - looks like a good bargain - that thread mentions Dixons doing it as well, so maybe shop around and see.
