CDR causing Laser Damage?

Jackook (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 30th September 2001, 22:00

I have been putting home movies from my Digital camera onto CDR`s and playingthem on the TV through my DVD player. But someone has just informed me that CDR`s don`t have a special coating on their surface. This causes the disk to reflect most of the laser light back into the machine and is slowly damaging the laser itself. It sounds plausable but It could be just a horror story. Does anyone out there have a definitive answer? I`d really rather not ruin my DVD player.

I agree it`s complete drivel. thats what happens when a dvd laser reads a disc, it has to read the refected light to decode it into pictures, and how else would a cd machine play music?

I think your `friend` is talking cobblers as well personaly - if this were to be true how would they explain how CD-RW drive lasers aren`t damaged by it !!

Hmm. A few years ago I bought a cheap audio only CDR machine having found a "hack" that would enable me to record onto cheap, unbranded computer CDRs instead of the expensive (back then) audio CDRs.

After a while I began to notice that CD players on which I regularly played them began to skip on these and other discs.

I wondered then if there might be a connection...in the end I sold the CDR machine to pay for some other hardware.

Perhaps there is some truth to this rumour...

Blazingmonga said `What if it was EVIL laser light`?

`....and I shall call it The Alan Parsons Project....`

:-)

Where did this load of old cobblers come from?

Can I start a rumour....howsabout `Lasers can set your CD`s on fire!`

I knew there was a reason for that fire extinguisher stuck to the system unit!
