Shinco portable DVD repairs ?

Chewinthecud (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 30th October 2005, 15:33

After over a year`s faithful service during my daily train commute my portable
DVD player, a Shinco SDP-1720, seems to have given up the ghost.

It would appear that it is no longer able to recognise any disc (DVD or CD) when inserted and despite much frantic disc spinning fails to load.

Does anyone have either a possible suggestion to correct the problem, or know of any companies in the UK that are able to repair this brand of player

May be worth persevering with a bit more. This happened to mine, but I tried a number of different discs and eventually it seemed to correct itself. Not very scientific I know!

Mine does the same, I just flip the dvd player on its side (turn it so that the left side is vertical) while the disc loads. Once the movie comes on screen you can watch it as normal.

Thanks for both suggestions, unfortunately neither has solved the problem, nor did a "gentle" tap of encouragement, ho hum

maybe something like that, you`d have to look into different ones to see what`d work coz i dont know.

i`ve been looking at portable dvd players all day and came accross your
message.

I`ve had the same problems with my Shinco for a while. Tipping it on one side seemed to work at first, but now doesn`t. Did you get any response from Shinco?

Mine has now got to the stage where it refuses to play the majority of discs, and I`m out of my warranty period unfortunately.
See this link. I followed the instructions to make an upgrade disc and it seems a lot better now. I gather though there may have been some problems with the lenses, so it may not solve the whole problem. Good luck.

My 1720 finally packed up completely.
The extremely nice and helpful people at Allcam have repaired it for £50 + £7 P&P. I think it needed a new lens. The early 1720s were obviously defective.
So big thumbs up for Allcam - I didn`t even buy the original unit from them.

After very occasional use over the last 9 months, it now doesn`t work at all. The repair was only guaranteed for 3 months so Allcam aren`t interested in it and will only offer free postage on a new machine. Bit fed up about it. I think I`m in the market for a new portable.
