Is this Panny E55 firmware safe?

Trentculp (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 5th August 2005, 17:10

My E55`s on the blink. I`ve been advised that I might need to upgrade its firmware. The Panasonic UK telephone support people were not helpful, but I found this page:

http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vDownloads?storeId=15001&langId=-1&page=DVDFirmware

I think it might be the American site. I`m worried that the E55 firmware listed might not work in my machine - in fact it might really screw it up!

Advice anyone?

Thanks

As it`s an official Panny site, I would imagine that the firmware is "safe" but how applicable to a UK machine might be another question.
As you have had no joy from the UK team, why not contact the US site and explain your problem and ask their advice ?
There is a contact form at : http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vContactUs?storeId=15001

I`ve done this for other products marketed by international manufacturers and have usually found that the US customer service has been very helpful.
They have a different outlook on service over there compared to our lot - in the US, customers are considered to be important !

Edit :
Just spotted this on that site which might explain why Rob J`s attempt failed :
"......If "U11"(DMR-E30/ DMR-HS2) or "UNSUPPORT" appears on the DVD recorder`s display during the update process, this indicates that the firmware already installed in your unit is either the same version or a newer version than the one you are trying to install. ......"

Thanks.

Yeah, the UK Panansonic helpline is a contradiction in terms - in fact, I`d describe their attitude as dismissive. Awful. It`s also bizarre that, unlike America, the UK Panny site doesn`t provide updates.

I`ll email the US support site as Gizmo suggested. Cheers.

Have you had any joy with this ?

My machine is not recording to 8X disks, SVP said it may be the firmware, and I found the DMRE55 download on Panasonic US site, but nothing helpful on the International/UK site. I can`t tell what version of firmware this download is, or that my machine currently has.
I copied to CD, but I do not want to try this until I am sure that it will not mess up the machine (or the multiregion capability) .

Trentculp - I would be very grateful if you could let me know whether you have resolved this.

I live in Romania - Europe and now I own such a piece of recorder.. :)
I cannot find DVD-RAM RW in Romania and I really need a FW update.

I found the JP site and as maybe you allready know, Japan and Europe are using the same Region code: 2

Latest firmware is dated April 5, 2005

What`s new ?
It corresponds to recording to the DVD-R disk for eight-X speed recording.
