Panasonic TVs

gezvader (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 5th February 2005, 19:43

I want a new widescreen tv, and by all accounts Panasonic is the best .

My main requirements are that it has a great picture. I`m not really bothered about things like Dolby Surround or whatever.

Thing is - the Panasonic tvs vary quite a bit in price . I`ve seen 28inch panasonic tvs from £260 to £600 or more . Is there really any difference in pic quality between them ?

50Hz Panny sets are recognised by the video press as the best CRT sets around.100Hz may reduce flicker(have you ever noticed any?),but it brings with it all manner of other problems.
If you use a DTT or Sky box, then a Panny 50Hz set will give you superb pictures, and a more natural look than any 100 Hz set will

That`s funny, coz my JVC won a group test that included a Panasonic. :D

is this true? can you explain why so i can understand (if you know of course)

I have recently bought a Panasonic 28TXPM11 100hz TV (£319 from Comet online), picture is excellent I feel, however i have sent one back as there was a slight buzz which spoilt viewing at a low volume level at night. The replacement also buzz`s a little too so im not sure what to do?

I have heard that 100hz TV will buzz more, any one know if thats true?

I find the 100hz picture far more `steady` than a 50hz, however my comparison is with a 32 inch 50hz so maybe the larger screen makes a difference?

Should i swap again for another, go for a 50hz 32inch, or try a different brand??

Any thoughts gratfully accepted!!

Panasonic are recognised as the best overall CRT sets, but obviously that does not mean that every test in every magazine is going to give Panny the winners badge.
100Hz v 50Hz is a very subjective comparison. However, unless you notice the flicker on 50 Hz there is no need to get a 100Hz set just because its the latest thing and the guy in the shop tells you its better.
A decent bit of research will show that 100Hz sets have all manner of picture processing features added to remove the usual 100Hz problems of blurry fast moving images, plastic faces, and unnatural colours.
Look at a newsreaders face on 100Hz and see if you can see any detail.A football match is the same. The pitch becomes a green blob of no detail.
100Hz are in a similar boat to plasma in that any lower quality images look bloody awful.Sky Digital, and to a lesser extent DTT,offer pretty poor pictures compared to the best that MPEG2 can offer-DVD,and this shows up on 100Hz more than on 50Hz.However,your own opinion that the pix looks good shows that this is a subjective area.
The bottom line is that if you cannot see any flicker on 50Hz (and many cannot) there is no point whatsoever in getting a 100Hz set,as reducing flicker is its sole purpose. But even What Video/Home Cinema Choice and the like now accept that the trade off between reduced flicker and other picture defects leaves it to the individual to really decide if they want plastic faces and blurry movement

Sorry, but who says that apart from you ? ;)
Is there some sort of league table of magazine results ?
Is there one particular source one can refer to that sifts through all the bumf going ?

I think your claims are pretty baseless,to be honest. :/

phelings

thanks for your opinion. So would you say I`m better off with a 32inc 50hz?

Also, new CRT`s dont have component in, so no progressive scan from compatablt DVD players, and as I will use the TV for years, will i miss out, is is progressive scan just another 100hz type thing?

Opinions anybody?

There`s no doubt component offers better picture quality than RGB scart.
However,if a component TV is outwith your budget then don`t worry about it as RGB scart is still a cracking picture.
If you decide on a non-component,50hz,32 inch TV then check out the JVC AV32R4.
It`s available for £484 from the likes of Shop at Hills and Digital point.
It`s been recommended as a `best buy` before.
It has a built-in subwoofer, which greatly improves sound,.
It also has a built-in centre (speech) speaker and built-in Dolby digital II decoder.
You plug in some rear speakers (about £40) and you have cheap, and perfectly acceptable, surround sound. :D

BOWFER,

If i dont need all the sound features (i only need the screen really as I have seperates for everything else), would any 32ins JVC give me the same picture? I`ll never use the audio feature you mention you see.
