cheap, dodgy, bargain bucket DVD players, which one?

side-burn-sid (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 1st May 2001, 10:11

I have recently looking for a DVD player, that has quite a lot of features for...(how may I say it?)...a degree student type price, for my beloved parents anniversary. I stumbled across the Himage DVD2290, it appears to be multi region, macrovision disabled with no arsing about with remotes, has anyone seen it in action? is the sound and vision ok, or is it more sweaty than a peodiophile on a bouncy castle? Also ive been looking at the Eclipse DVD595, LG DVD3200 and the Cyber Home ADN212, all which seem to have a lot of features for the wonga, so what would be best to aim for? Also does all this dolby digital decoding and DTS thinymajig matter, me Ma & Pa have quite a nice surround sound TV system so would that benefit them? All that stuff appears to be even on some of the cheap players. Please aid me in my quest before I eat my parents so they wont have an anniversary.....

Sid,

I can recommend the LG and the Eclipse, Eclipse comes out the box region free, the LG doesn`t but you can easierly hack it via the remote. Can`t vouch for the other two players.(incidently I have an LG 3200e and happy with it)

As for the question on DTS or Dolby etc, you are right mar and par will not worry about this feature, it will still sound good on their setup.

HTH

BTW don`t eat the parents unles you use plenty of bar-b-cue sauce !

Hi,

I recommend the LG3000E, the picture quality is better than the LG3200E thanks to the C-Cube ZiVA-4.1 MPEG A/V decoder, LG3200E use the earlier version ZiVA 3 decoder. Both model multi region hackable, and 3000E VCD hackable as well, don`t try VCD hack on LG3200E!!!

Sound quality should be very good if you connect to a Dolby Prologic TV, this model is the younger brother of the well known LG3350E, details can be found at www.lgdvd.co.uk. Tesco sell at £149.99.

Good luck

I`ve also got a Himage 2290 - excellent machine. It`s a bit temperamental at times - especially when I try and rewind a DVD - but the sound and picture quality is ace. It`s only got composite or S-VHS outs, though, so for the best picture quality, make sure Ma and Pa`s TV has a scart input that supports S-VHS.
