I was going to ask a similar question regarding a HP Ipaq handheld. I`m going to America soon and thought I might get one over there as they are quite a bit cheaper.
Would there be any problems?

American mains electricity is 110 volts our`s is 240 volts so plugging an american charger into our power supply directly will produce a big and nasty suprise. DON`T DO IT. You will probably need a step down transformer (about the size of a brick) or buy a UK spec charger from Apple. Both options tend to wipe out savings.

yeah, but if we want to take something over that involves plugging into the wall we just use an plug adapter. will it not work the same way then?

The sort of thing you are talking about are dual voltage devices such as electric shavers I don`t think chargers fall in that category.

i have the first gen ipod, and the power adapter kind of blew on me.
I plugged one end of the firewire cable into the mac without realising the other end was in the power adapter, which was plugged into the wall! :/ (something u should not do) the mac`s screen went black, but was ok, just blown the power adapter. ;)

so had to get another, and picked one up from ebay, an american power adapter, which till had the 2 prong plug on it, all u do it take off the 2 prong, and click on the uk 3 pronger, and hey hey, it works fine, did some research before, the power adapters are the same, just have to have the correct end for it.

you can get a world travel kit from the apple store, has different ends and all sorts.

cheers

Get a hold of a charger, or an iPod owner and ask them to tell you the ratings plate info.

You may be surprised to find that almost ALL camcorder, and lots of Digital Camera charger/adapters are actually marked 110-250V AC, making them suitable for worldwide use with the correct plug added to the end.

Apple may have done the same, as it`s good business sense as one unit an be manufactured then a simple add on to send it elsewhere in the world.

(My latest gadget is me USB 2 hard drive, which has the 110-250 power unit, and came with a 3 prong power lead *and* a 2 prong one)
